Bearman, I have hunted the Beaver flattops a couple years back. We hunted 2nd season rifle. The elk moved back and forth between private land and the Flattops. Alot of nice deer in this unit. Saw some monster herd bulls on private from the flattops.

Good luck, Mac

Hello I am planning my first archery elk hunt in unit 12 for next year 2003 and am looking for any info I can get. I have been looking at the Sleepy Cat and the Sand Pk. areas. I was told they are good areas. I plan on camping and have no idea of where to do this. Have never been out there. What areas are you planning on hunting, where are you going to camp? If you you dont mind sharing info on areas email me. David Bormann

I have hunted area 12 since 1992, on Thornburg mountain. I look at Sleepy Cat peak every day. I also backpacked the Aldridge Lakes region, near Sleepy Cat, a few years ago. I hunt the late gun season and all our Elk come from Sleep Cat. That area should be good for bow hunters, I saw a tremendous amount of sign there. Good luck and good shooting.

just got back from scouting area 12 and area 5 , got to see both fire's up close , they seem to be contained and don't look like they will impact hunting this year, the elk are starting to bugle and I met one hunter that had taken a bull, very, very dry, like hiking in talcum powder, also temp's were in the 70/80's, light rain had started to fall as I was leaving fri. but they expect more rain this weekend,I did not see a single elk in 3 day's , but very hot so I guess they were nocturnal, saw lot's of doe's and yearling's plus 2 3x3 still in velvet and a terrific 5x5 not in velvet near Wolcott, Co. Saw a dead spike bull on the side of the road north of Steamboat, at first I thought he had been killed by a vehicle, but upon closer inspection it appeared to only have puncture wound's and his side and back looked like he had been flogged, maybe killed by another bull ? good hunting
