I got about 60 Pictures of this Deer this weekend on my Oly 750 camera while Bowhunting this weekend. I am having some trouble in the woods with Focus locks. anyway to improve upon this?
I've got the 750 too and my biggest problem has been lowlight situations. It seems like it has to be sunny for the crazy camera to meter a shutter speed over 1/30 th. I was in Oklahoma on a bow hunting trip a couple weeks ago and I was testing the 750 out while on the stand for the first time and I was shocked at how poor it's light gatherin cablitlities where. It was early morning but it was practially broad daylight in the trees and the camera still metered 1/20 and 1/30. I then took it out on an evening hunt and had the same problem. Don't get me wrong, it's a great little camera but for anything other than very bright conditions I think you'd need a tripod. Also let me add, I'm not asking too much of this camera at all. My E-10 would have easily taken a photo at a faster shutter speed than 1/30 in both the situations.
Sorry I can't help with your focus issue, I'm having the same problem. It seems the camera really needs something contrasting to get a good focus lock. I think someone will be able to offer some tips on that. WildBird are you around? I think I remember you giving me some advice one time about this?
Dan that is a nice buck and the photos turned out great. Thanks for sharing!
It is possible that you are focusing on the foreground. (trees and branches) You can open up the aperature to like f4 to get more in focus, but then slow shutter speeds will plague you even more.. what you may have to do is half press the shutter on a tree or something behind or beside the animal, and then move the frame to include the deer. That way the half press would have calculated the focus distance to the tree, and not the brush in the immediate forground.
I had similiar problems with this shot. It really frustrated me.
Thnaks, hes a Pretty nice deer.. we cross paths again hes headed to the Taxidermist.
LandLord,
Yes that is it. The camera wants to focus on things closer than the target subject. Its VERYYYY hard in the woods to get a good picture because of this, with branches, leves and all else going on. I have tried your suggestion about focusing on a tree and bringing it into align with the target subject and then pressing shuuter to snap the shot, Hrad also to do because if you cannot get a tree within almsot exact range of the subject it will be Blurred also. VERY frustratiing, because I see alot of Good deer, but have trouble getting the pics.
I am gonna play around a Bit and see what I can do to Improve upon this
also there is always manual focus. The only reason I think this might work is that if you are bow hunting, you probably have mental notes as to how far certain objects are (stumps, trees, etc). On my cam, when I put it in manual focus mode, it gives a digital readout as to how far the focus is reaching. So assuming your cam has manual focus mode, and it has a digital readout, when you see the deer walk by your 15 yard mark, click over to manual focus, and set the focal length so that it reaches focus at 15 yards.
Manual focus is definitely a weak spot for me when shooting anything moving.
Thank you for the replies... I respect your Saviness and Knowledge of Photography, you have had some great shots... I am weak at this sort of thing, But am working on it.
As you mentioned the manual focus I am VERYYYY weak at also, things are happening fast in the woods and not being able to snap a pic in auto mode is tough. But I will strive to do better and make best of what the camera offers. a E-10 would be nice, But outta my budget rite now. Did you ever get yours?
I know you were considering a loan to get your equipment. you have a nack for it.. I think you need to follow your calling and go ahead
OBH....no that bad of a picture considering the limbs and leaves in the way.
What resolution did you use.....in situations like that I try to use a higher resolution and faster shutter speed. It also compensates for any movement of the animal.
I take most of my pics in 3200x2400, unless i want a higher quality to enlarge, then I use tiff. It makes a lot of difference.
I had the same exact problem with my C2100 when I first got it. The way that I got it to focus on what I wanted was to look in the menus. By default, mine was set up to let the camera decide what to focus on as long as it was in the field of view. It always seemed to focus on trees and not the animal. I changed the setting in the menu so that it focuses only on what the crosshair in the view finder is pointing at. This fixed the problem for me.
The Resolution was set by the Camera since I used it in auto Mode. So I am not real sure what I ended up with here. I looked under properties and its not there. I know it shows me when the pics are still on the card in the camera, But at this Point I dont know.
Droptine.
This camera can do that... I will look thru the menus and manual and determine excatly to what degree, The Function is called AEL. It will snap whatever is in the Block focus point area, It helps but still is a problem.
So much in the woods to get in the way of shots. Its pretty tough to geta clean shot off. I will look into this further. Thanks
Stu,
Yes...I had this Deer within 5 yards of my stand and was within 20 yards for about 5 Minutes... I passed on this Deer at the time... I have seen him 3 times now 2 of 3 within range.
But I seen him fighting with a Bigger Buck But after seeing the Bigger Buck he has a left Busted G2 and G3. so I will now take this Deer given the Opportunity again if its offered.
