My cousin drew a cow elk tag in Kentucky this year. One of 300 tags drawn. He got a nice 2-year old cow Saturday morning. One shot at 198 yards with a 270. His first time elk hunting. He was jazzed to say the least. Said it "only" took five people to load it into the truck!

Tell me about BDB. I'm already missing going to the freezer and getting a package out of it to cook up. May have to do some begging for a Christmas present from him! Besides, he already has two deer in the freezer from deer season!

Hey Kentuck,

Send my congrats to your cousin. I would have gutted and field dressed that cow, but I understand if this is the first Elk. It is great to see Elk hunted in states that never had them. I can't tell how old that cow is, but your cousin might be well served by letting it hang a couple weeks. Older cows are usually mostly hamburger with some good cuts. Look at the teeth and see how worn...your cousin can compare it sorta to white tail teeth wear for a guess-timate unless the wildlife people checked it and said it was 2.

Myself, I am hanging my tag to age it just right...If you lightly sautee it in butter and then add garlic salt and pepper...it tastes a lot better.
Congrats,
Dave

I'll pass on the cograts Dave. He told me after eating some of it, his wife wants to put in for the hunt next year! She doesn't hunt too! Looks like two more will be in that draw next year. That will be his whole family.
