Look at Utah, they typically have late season cow elk hunts in the northern part of the state for a decent price. You typically hunt private land when the snows push the elk down. Do a quick search on this site and you should find what you're looking for.

Best of luck.

I was doing some research on guided hunts and there are some basicly guarented cow elk hunts for$ 1500 in New Mexico amd Colorado. Check SJ Outdoors or type New Mexico elk hunts. Easton magazine has info and a book for do it yourself elk hunts. let us know how yours turned out.

Put in for a cow tag in AZ and hunt on your own. You can do a DIY hotel (late season) or camp (early season) hunt for a fraction of a guided hunt and have an excellent chance at success.

I can help you with some unit suggestions if you want.

Another option is either the White Mountain or San Carlos Indian Reservation. Tag prices are comparable with most non-resident fees.

Rob Snow is alright. I've talked to him a number of times and it also seems those who buy tags from him do alright. It may be easier to hunt one of the ranches closer to SLC than in other parts of the state where you might get a slightly better deal given travel time, expenses.

I'm going to a ranch in Southeastern Utah tomorrow so I'll see how much tags are going for down there--he usually has more than he can sell. A couple years back they were going for $400 too. Most of the elk are up the mountain a little ways but I still have a decent chance this weekend. In another few weeks, it's almost a guaranteed thing.

You ccould consider a late season cow hunt in WY, in Grand Teton National Park. YOu would apply for a area 79 type 6, or a area 75 type 2 tag. The area 79 tags don't sell out, and the reduced price ones only will cost you about $250. The hunt starts Oct 20 and ends around Dec 3. I live here and take a couple elk on this hunt every year. A couple of my buddies came out from out of state this year and they both took cows after 4-5 days of hunting. It is a morning hunt and very weather dependent. YOu just need to get a hotel room in town and get out there every morning. Not the most glamous hunt, but is a last resort for some people, as you can also use your unused WY tags on the National ELk Refuge as welll Good luck.
