I'm looking into doing a Cow Elk hunt, possibly this year with the Hunting Company, one of JHO sponsors. Has anyone ever used them at all? Seem pretty good for a meat hunt, probably will be 3 of us heading over there. In their add, it says $213 for licensing fees, is this the cost for a cow elk tag? They said in can be purchased using a Land owner voucher.

Thanks for you help.

Mel,

I will be following your post, as it receives more information. This last November, I hunted tule cow elk at Hunter Liggett. The cost for the special draw tag was just at $300. The cow weighed 265 lbs. field dressed and is definitely worth getting, for meat quality.

If you have a website for your outfitter, I would like to check it out.

What did you know Mel.......I was thinking about the same thing. Four of us were talking about it. We were thinking about next November. I just saw that Huntinco just increased their tresspass fee from $350 to $450. I just heard that Utah will increase the tag fee to 50% from the $213. So we are looking about $1000/person. A couple guys are now thinking twice.

L2H,
I emailed them yesterday with some questions. They said the licenses are $213, but i'm replying to see if the tag increase is for this years hunts or next years. Also, since these are cow elk hunts purchased with a landowner voucher, they may be less.

Also, they raised the fee to $495 for this years hunts. He said local loging is $30 - $40 per day, and it's only a 10 hour drive for me, about 750 miles. So the entire trip will be less than $1000.

I wanted to go to Az for a cow elk hunt, but this is a better deal, and I don't have to go through the draw.

Right now there's 3 of us planning on going.

Valle Vidal is "Quality", even for cows, meaning the high $766 price tag. One thing nice about NM is that they take your first available choice, so you can put down a tough to draw bull hunt as your first choice, something with more reasonable draw odds as your second, and an easy to draw cow hunt as a third choice. And if you are wilkling to take a chance where you go, do the fourth too.

Jeez-$766 for a cow, that's crazy. I'm calling the department today.

BDB had good luck in 6C last which is right next door to Valle Caldera (6B) over in NM. That's a few hours further than Utah but not by much.

http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/index....topic=52640&hl=

I'm sure the Vidal, Gila and Caldera are spectacular and a great opportunity to not only harvest a cows but to see or photo some great bulls.

Another good cow hunt in NM is in 5b. A lot of elk drop out of the high country of the surrounding units. The herd in 5b goes from about 1,000 up to 4,000 head of elk during the end of October, beginning of November. The cow hunt is in early November.

A $1000 to shoot a cow? That seems like alot of money to me. You know you could get a drop hunt, pack string style, unguided for around that same price, hunt for five days and possibly get one of the either sex tags and have a chance to shoot a bull or a cow. Just something to think about. I guess it just depends on what your looking for.

Mel,

I thought you were planning for next Fall. Are you going to hunt before end of January? If you are, good luck and let us know how you did.

The Executive Director of the NM Council of Guides and Outfitters set up a meeting with the NM Game and Fish to ask why the heck the Non-resident Q or HD hunts for cows are the same as bulls. We are hoping we can get them reduced before the apps for next fall. I think someone absolutely screwed up at the Dept. Will let you know the outcome. Jim

Jim, the Valle Vidal cow hunts have been that way since they went to the quality hunts, a number of years ago. I would not apply for a cow at that price, but would like to get to hunt it someday.

Mel, the antlerless price changes, if any, would not be until the new antlerless regulations come out for the 05-06 season. Not sure why you would be stuck on AZ for a cow hunt either, NM, UT, CO, and WY reduced cow tags are all cheaper ($250 ish), and do not use your valuable AZ points.

Dawg,
I'm not really stuck on an AZ cow elk hunt, my dad lives there and I was going to do a combo visit with the pops and hunt. Saves on hotel and food, LOL.

The guy i've been talking too, said the %50 increase in tag fee is for a Bull Elk. He thinks the cows were going up like $20 if at all. But when I look at the Utah website, it just say NR Elk fees are $388, it doesn't say if an antlerless tag is less. Can anyone confirm the price for a cow tag?
L2H,
I'm thinking of heading up in November, if not it will be in January of `06

Chris,
This pack string unguided hunt for $1000, is this including tag fees? If so, post up some information. Actually, post up anyhow, I may be into it for next year for a bull. Do you have a specific outfit in mind that does this, or is this just the going rate? I've seen these type of hunts before, but after gas and food for the entire trip, and cost of tags your into it for $1500 - $2000 for an unguided hunt. Which isn't bad providing your in a good area.

I have a lot of options when it comes to hunting for Deer or Elk, I have family in Crawford Colorado, Kingman Arizona, a place in Medicine Bow Wyoming for antelope, and hopefully deer real soon. It just for this year, I can do this cow hunt and still have vacation time for my other hunts I have scheduled. Next year maybe a little different, I have other plans in mind, hopefully a Coues/Javalina trip.

Mel,
Cool. Sounds like AZ makes a bunck os sense then. Not sure where you could hunt elk out of Kingman, units 8 and 10 would be a bit far for a base camp out of Kingman. I think elk units west of that are more marginal, but if you do your homework...
And yes, I doubt that Utah raises cow elk fees much. They look at cow elk hunting as a management tool, and their nonresident tag prices are the lowest anywhere. The $388 is fot the standard bull/spike hunts, not cow. The 2005/2006 antlerless addendum comes out around May, the antlerless draw is in June. You will not know prices until then. The 2004/2005 one should be on their website now, that is the one that will apply for a hunt this January.
Have Fun

Mel, your right a pack string hunt for a $1000 wouldn't include your non res. tag for Colorado. So after you figure in travel costs, license cost and food, tip?, you would probably be in for closer to $2000 total trip. I have seen several outfits that have these trips from the price range of $1000 to $1500. I know last year you could get a either sex tag for some of the units on the flattop wilderness area, the bad part is you have to pay for a bull tag but the good part is if you can't get a bull you might still be able to get a cow so you don't go home empty handed. Here is one of the outfits that offer the drop hunts on the flattops for $1000. www.packstringoutfitters.com .

If you're looking for a cow hunt next Fall, don't rule out Wyoming. I just posted some of the details in a different topic (Wyoming Regulations), but it's a great hunt with high success rates. I can also put you in touch with some local guides, if you're interested.

Mel,

Next November is what I'm planning for. Maybe we can hookup and carpool there. Or share the cost of expense like lodging. With the price increase a couple of my buddies may drop out the deal but for sure I and pop are game.

L2H, are you referring to November of `05 or `06? We are planning for `05. The price increase really isn't too bad, it's only about $50 for the hunt, and maybe $20 for the license increase.

I'm going to call the guy this weekend to see when's the best time to book, and how many spots are available.

If your up for a November hunt in `05, then yeah, maybe we can hook up. As of right now, we have 3 people going up in my Tahoe, a 4th will be no problem. We will tow a trailer for our gear and game after the hunt, and will probably have it processed in Utah, to be within the CWD regulations.

Kick it around a little, and let me know.

P.S. Did you get my email on WU?

Mel,

November '05 is what I had in mind. It will be at least I and my dad that may go. I will ask some of my buddies to see if they are still interested. We will be driving another truck. Let me know what you find about booking and open spots. I might not book my spot until I find out if I get my draw results from other states. I think I won't be taking much gear with me because lodging will be a local hotel. I'm thinking about deboning the meat and bringing it back with me. I heard bringing meat back without any bone will fall within CWD regulations.

Yes I got your email and just replied back.

L2H,
Sounds good, i'll keep you posted on what I find out. Would be kind of cool to have a few guys from here to head over and take care of some elk for these guys. If I can't get it processed in Utah, then I'll probably just do the same as you, bone out and bring it back.

I don't have anything planned for out of state, just taking my son up to X3b this year, he should draw with 3 points. Going to go look for my bucks dad, or atlease his twin
