Hello. I live in San Diego. I would like a cow elk for the freezer this year but don't have a lot of money. Does anyone have any advice of a close as possible place to hunt? Does any public land have good odds for cow elk that wouldn't require drawing? otherwise I will pay for a landowner tag but would prefer to drive.

Thanks!

If you can drive to CO, you can get OTC archery tags for either-sex (about $500) or cow-only ($250), and knock yourself out. There are a ton of elk in that state. I think you can get a rifle tag for cow-only in some units too, but you'll want to check the CO DOW website for details.

I think ID also has OTC cow tags. Never hunted there, so can't help you much on that one. Check their website.

Oregon has OTC archery tags, but I don't think they do OTC rifle for non-res... someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I think Speckmisser hit the nail on the head--SW CO would be the closest and best bet for OTC cow elk tags from what I've gathered unless AZ or NM has some decent leftover cow tags left. The Indian reservations have started to bump their prices up into the (what I feel) outrageous price ranges for tags....although, I hear you can make offers and they sometimes take a few hundred for a cow tag (...thinking AZ or NM).

I have no personal experience hunting in CO but I know there are areas thick with elk. I managed to snatch up a leftover cow tag here in Utah since I didn't draw a cow tag this year...but, the pickings here are very slim here in UT right now for antlerless...only areas with mostly private land are left now.

I think speck hit it. or maybe leftovers in Utah . Also look online for tags that outfitters and land owners couldn't sell or hunts cancelled . I've heard of some real deals, but sometimes it is on short notice.

Can you buy the left over tags over the counter or do you still have to draw them?

In CO, you can buy them right at the sporting goods store (or any license agent) or you can get them online at the DOW website.
