This turned out to be a real quick hunt. On the second day of the morning hunt, I was into heavy elk sign. I spotted a herd of 15 cows but they ran off into a canyon prior to me going over there. That afternoon I hiked the 1/2 - 1 mile over a small canyon and to get over into the open area where I had earlier spotted the cows.

As soon as I could see the opening, I also saw a few cows and calves. They were about 275 yards. There was no wind. I set up my bipod, waited for a broadside shot, and....cow down.

I was shooting my '06 with Federal High Energy 165 gr TBBs.

By the time I gutted the cow, it was getting pretty dark. I did not want to pack a load over the rocks with just my head lamp and led flashlight. Temperatures were getting down in the mid-20s so I opted to leave the cow there 'til the morning.

This morning on the way into the area, I saw a tremendous 350" class bull but could not get to my camera in time to take any footage. I did manage to get some smaller bulls and some cows on tape. I'll upload some of those shots later.

Friday I saw at least 150 deer. Also, I saw a good 170 class 4x4 and a number of decent bucks. I only had my camera today and did manage to get some footage of a buck a lot folks would call a shooter.

All in all, great trip!

I drew a cow tag through the state draw. The ranch owner sells tags. I'm not sure how much he charges. He gets tens of thousands for bull tags and I'm not sure what he gets for cow tags.

The self-guided cow hunts run around 50% success rate. There are better hunts for cows that run in the 90%+ success catagory. I'm not sure if Rob has tags for a better hunt or not. If you want the rancher's name & number, send me an email.
