Very tough from what I've heard, assuming you mean BLM land. Few pigs, lots of steep and brush.

You'd be better off going to Cache Creek. Buddy took a hog and deer out there this last year

Yep - lots of it. Access is off highway 20 or highway 16. Google it - Cache Creek Wildlife Area. Wilson Valley is supposed to be a decent area for hogs and turkeys, but it's a hike in and I think is closed during elk calving season. There's also lots of public land near Indian Valley Reservoir. I think there are some fairly recently burned areas that attract deer. Beautiful area, you'll at least have a good hike.

I was just in Cache Creek in the Cowboy Camp area. I saw a butt load of ruts around oaks, and a few elk on the way out. What are the pigs eating in that area this time of year. I didn't see any pigs, but I got a ground squirrel. Last month I was at Maxwell and chased some pigs and they we're eating berries up there. I want to go out again this weekend either Friday or Sunday morning, I could use a hunting buddy. I've never hunted before and would like to go with someone that knows the animal land if anyone is up for a trip let me know. I'm in the south bay but I'll drive to that area. Next time I'm not forgeting my 22 Cowboy Camp was thick with ground squirrels.

Who knows what they're eating.. If they're rooting it could be grubs, roots, acorns, nuts... They find a good spot and they'll keep coming back till it's used up or they're pressured out of there. This time of year they don't have to look for water as much so focus on feed and bedding areas. Start at the freshest sign and follow it out.

Good luck!

Thanks I think I'm going to try maxwell but I like the idea of grabbing some squirrels during the heat of the day and I found a sweet Squirrel spot at Cache Creek. I guess I'll look more google earth and try and find an area that has less oaks since they are bare right now. I know pigs are not active when it's hot, and someone said they don't like the sun because they have sensitive skin... but pig skin football?? LOL. What about in the mornings? Are they not active in the morning till things warm up to the low 50's? Just trying to get a feel for there activity. Thanks in advance.

Ive hunted pigs in the heat and in snow...in the morning and towards the evening... i ve seen pigs in the morning... afternoon... and evening.
Now what does this mean???...just means u gotta kno the terrain... lay of the land...and just when i think i got the pig figured out....they do or go somewhere else...thats why i love to hunt them....hunt early until noon...than start again 3 hrs before dark..pigs are pretty smart and adapte very well... theres more to it...but just keep hitting the field... just remember food..water..bedding
