I took about 15 photos of this guy, had a little breeze and it was starting to drizzle. The photo is soft and I'm not sure how to take the it sharper, maybe it's time to go back to shooting everything in manual like the old days of 35MM.

The camera settings seem OK. You're shutter speed was high enough. A little sharpening in PS would probably help but it looks like a pretty heavy crop so it's not gonna be super sharp after that.

First off, great looking photo/coyote. It does look a tad soft, and I can understand that you might like it sharper, but its not too bad. Was the photo cropped aggressively?

My 75-300 lens doesnt focus properly. I find that if I can manually focus it, it does better. I have heard that I can send my lens into Canon, and they can calibrate the focus points.. costs about $150 bucks though

Here is the original photo as taken except resized, as you can see it was radically cropped. I was using a 200mm @2.8 lens with a 1.4 TC. I too have wondered how an auto focus lens knows what is the correct focus. Thanks to everyone for their input, I'm still learning.

Maybe just a little soft, but a great pic none the less. Have had a few issues with my 200 mm lens with my minolta just a few times when it was really cold.

Might be able to sharpen it up a little bit more with whatever photo processing software you are using.
