New guy to the forums here. I've hunted a lot, but never for pig. I went to the Sportsman's expo in Sac and talked with several different outfits offering pig hunts.
I met George at the expo and talked with him quite a bit. I've decided to try a hunt with him in March. He offered two plans. The spot and stalk was $300 for one day or $500 for two or the fully guided with dogs which I've opted for which is $500 for the day and $300 for second hog. This seemed to be average cost from the guys I talked with.
The only rifle I have is a .270 which I plan to load with Nosler Partition 150 grain bullets. With the dog hunting they said the average shot was 30-40 yards so I figure this is heavy enough. Any suggestions on different loads?
I'll let the list know how the hunt goes and what I think of the operation when I've hunted it.
3G, good luck with the hunt, and make sure you come back and let us know how it went... take lots of pictures.
Your gun setup will be fine for hogs. With the hounds, the main thing you'll want to do (and the guide will probably drill this into you anyway) is be aware of where the dogs are before you pull the trigger. Don't want a pass-through to hit a dog. Houndsmen get a little aggravated when you shoot their animals.
Most of my hunts with dogs have always been shoot the pig behind the ear at point blank with a .357 Mag. revolver with someone holding both the hogs hind legs. On two of my hunts, the dogs bayed up mean old fighting boars. That's when the rifle come in for a 20-30 yards shot. My advise is that unless you tell the guide you are expecting to shoot a mean fighting boar, the chance of getting to use the rifle is very slim. If the hog is a sow or a young boar, it may turned out with the guide holding the hind legs of the hog and handing you his .44 Mag. revolver to put it behind the ear at point blank. At least that was what happened to all my guided hunts with dogs.
Thanks for the info guys. yeah, the absolutely last thing I'd want to do is shoot one of the dogs. I run Pointing dogs in Trials and tests as well as hunt and that's always my biggest fear when hunting with someone new.
I'll pack a heavy caliber handgun along - that way I'll be ready for pretty much any circumstance.
I'm jazzed! I haven't been this excited about an upcoming hunt in a long time. Feels good to rekindle the Passion!
Photo's and review in March... man that seems like a long time away now.
Not sure if George will give us the same deal we got from Ken. I'll call to ask and let yall know. The other thing is I got rid of my quad and only have the Suzuki Samurai. Not sure if the Sammii will be able to climb those steep hills like the quad.
I think those toys give us more headaches than being on foot. At least that's how I feel on the Rokon. Just glad I got rid of that thing. Didn't miss a thing about that ride...
I've experienced the headaches of those rokon, that's why I didn't get one. The quad was sweet. The only thing I regret about mine is that I didn't get the one with the liquid cooled motor. I had the air cooled 250cc and that thing burns when it doesn't get enough air to cool it off. I might pickup another one next year and it will be a 650cc Honda Rincon.
