Anybody ever hunt/visit the area called Cronan Ranch in D5 zone? I can't seem to find any info on it - maybe b/c it's one of those secret hot spots??

It seems that its legal to hunt there and isn't too far from me. Better yet, is there anything to hunt there like deer or hogs? It's mainly a BLM park/bicycle area kinda dealy, but hunting is allowed.

There are "no" hog's in that area, you are wasting your time looking there. That piece of BLM is not very friendly to hunters, you get alot of people horse back riding in area, and day hikers. Either group is not real friendly to people carrying firearms...

Take a long look at the hunting regulations under pig hunting harvest reports and you'll see that D-5 Amador, Calaveras, Toulumne, Placer, and El Dorado Counties don't hold popluations of wild pigs.

There are multiple canyons in the D5 that hold pigs and they are increasing every year. It's easiest to locate them when the snow hits about 3000 feet.

Really? The way pigs are (in terms of populating themselves and being able to survive almost anywhere), I would not doubt it.

Have you ever shot a pig in those areas, jerryt?

I live real close to Cronan Ranch

I spent a lot of time researching it. If you check out DFG data maps many deer are taken from there - but hunting is very restricted. Deer can be taken only with Archery, Smoothbore Slugs, or muzzle loaders (after fire season). Only other hunting allowed is Fall Turkey. Would have hunted deer there this year - but wife got hurt.

Even if pigs were there, you couldn't shoot them. However, I am sure that will change quickly if they show up and start trashing the place.

I've killed pigs on public land in the D5 near Avery. There are also some pigs in a couple spots near Sheep Ranch and Mountain Ranch.

I see... I wasn't aware of the firearm restrictions in Cronan Ranch. All i saw was that it's relatively nearby and allows hunting. And yea, supposedly there's a lotta hiking, biking, and horse riding there too...

So where do ya guys suggest for pig huntin near Sac/Rancho Cordova??

Plan on driving somewhere.....

and paying to hunt. I don't think there is any productive public land hunting near where we live.

I have hunted with a guide near Ukiah. I understand there are places a little North of Sac in the Valley.

yes they do, but only problem is the horse people..... they ride everywhere! I've hunted it several times from early morning to late evening from week days to weekends, seen a few deer but very very spookey... not really a good place, it was at first but not now. if you could get across the river there is a small area that is in the ranch that might be good, but the water is fast and ball shrinking cold....

So if it were u would u give cronan ranch a try ? Or just not worth it.. It's very close to my house. If u were going or have Ben what would be the best place to try . On the weekends ime limited on the use of car since the wife needs it and our other car needs work.so its doable erly morning trip for me vs going up to ice house are or morman immigrant trail area

Cronan ranch looks to have a decent deer population and some turkeys but I've never seen any pig sign out there. Also, I believe rifles aren't allowed and you can only use shotguns, archery tackle, and perhaps muzzleloaders. I don't think the rifle restrictions apply to adjacent Magnolia ranch BLM piece, which was also devoid of pig sign last time I was out there. I think there are better options for deer close by, especially if you want to use a rifle. Like the Auburn State Rec. area and the lower reaches of National Forest land just above Georgetown and Foresthill. These areas hold some resident bucks plus wintering migratory deer. Don't know about pigs.
