GOOSE LAKE: This is a California Waterfowl owned property encompassing 2,200 acres located in Wasco, CA roughly 8 miles south of Kern National Wildlife Refuge in Kern County. This year, we reconstructed 300-acres of wetlands on the Houchin Unit to improve water use efficiency and promote the growth of waterfowl food plants, such as swamp timothy and watergrass. Two 15-acre irrigated upland units were also constructed and will be planted with winter wheat and safflower this fall to create waterfowl nesting habitat and high quality dove hunting opportunities next year. The Houchin Unit has been flooded as a sanctuary in the past, but this is the first time the Houchin Unit will be open to public waterfowl hunting. Due to the recent construction activities and newly installed hunting blinds, vegetation will be sparse.

The reconstruction of the Houchin Unit is phase I of series of projects that will take place on the Goose Lake property. Phase II will include the restoration and enhancement of more than 600 acres of wetlands that we hope to open to hunting in time for the 2015-2016 hunting season.
