D9 & D13 Deer and Bear Hunting

Hey all,

New to the site and have been seeing tons of useful information about deer and bear hunting in the SoCal units. That said I’m having trouble finding current threads. I have a D9 and D13 deer tag this year and I picked up a bear tag for fun after seeing a bunch of older comments regarding how many bears there are. I’ve got a few areas picked out using OnX maps that I plan to scout soon and would love to bounce some of my ideas off of anyone who has hunted those areas (bow or rifle, because I use both).

I’ve hunted D9 once in the Piute area but only saw does. Never hunted D13. I’ve spent most my time hitting D16 the last few years (but now its unfortunately a premium tag) and I also had a great hunt in D17 last year. Anyone who has questions on those units I’m more than happy to help out.

How did you draw 17 if you just started? That has been a draw tag for a long time. Maybe you were super lucky. I did not notice 16 as a premium tag this year, but was not paying close attention. 13 is very close to LA and will be tough with small animals if you find a legal buck. Fraser Park area would be where I would look, but heavy pressure there. Get away from the roads for sure.
I’ve been saving points for 17 and will most likely put in for that next year. I will hit you up then for all your hidi-holes then haha.

Didn’t just start hunting - been hunting pretty much my whole life. I’m just new to using this site as a resource. I had 2 points when I drew D17. I’m gonna go to D17 again this year to guide some of my cousins who drew it.

I actually just did a scouting trip the other weekend in D13 and found two really solid bucks for SoCal (big 3x3 and massive 2x2) plus one spike. It was tough though with the heat and lack of water. D9 is next on the list!

I know 2 guys that have each taken deer from D9 a couple times each in the last few years. I've also seen some nice ones riding around in the back of trucks the last couple of years while in D9. Only ever seen a bear once in D9. He was a little guy, maybe 65-75lbs, but he was a beautiful cinnamon color.

Ok, I miss understood your question, sorry. Congrats on the scouting! That is quite an accomplishment in 13. I will definitely put in for 17 next year as I'll have 3pts. The preserve has some good areas. I've got a D8 tag and am going to work the Eastern edge along the X10 border or maybe the extreme NW corner as far from a road as I can get. Need to get a bear tag as some talk of an appreciable increase in bear populations there. Best of luck!
