Went bow hunting in Africa this past July and I wasn't going to leave without a warthog. Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperating so I had to stick whatever came close. I was hoping for a bigger one, but this one will have to do. I drilled him at 22 yards, complete pass thru - and after the arrow passed he just stood there for a couple of seconds trying to figure out what just bit him. He ran about 100 yards in a fairly straight line and piled up under one of those nasty thorn bushes. Even though it was a good double-lung shot, he was still alive as we (carefully) approached. I was trying to get a clear look at him so I could put another arrow in him, but the bush was in the way. No worries, a minute or two later he rolled over dead. Very cool animal to whack, I was happy. For those interested, I used the new Mathews Z7 (love it), Carbon Express Maxima Hunter arrows and Slick Trick Magnum 125 broadheads. This set up worked flawslessly with the other animals as well.

You know K rad, we ate just about every type of wild game Africa has, all of it awesome (not gamey at all), but warthog is just not eaten much in Africa. So, no we didn't try it because no one does - way too tough and not good tasting.

Sancho, if you ever get a chance to approach a wounded warthog, you'll know what I mean by dangerous, for sure. Heck, try to approach a wounded (or not wounded) wild boar here in the states. In any case, I was able to bag a gemsbok, kudu, red hartebeest, jackal and wildebeest, and the warthog. I hunted in ground blinds, pit blinds, tree stands and spot 'n stalk. Over water holes and in the bush, a great experience - hope you make it happen!

It's costly for sure, but it's also a hunting value compared to guided hunts in the states. An average guided elk hunt these days averages about 6 or 7K and you may not get an elk. The average caribou hunt costs about the same, for that amount you'll, unles you're a horrible hunter, you'll get 5 or 6 incredible animals.

I think it would be amazing to arrow one of those. Congrats on the memory! Now if I can get one of those horned creatures, deer, to cooperate.

wow awesome story we were just talking about an African hunt last weekend :) You get a lot of great animals for the price of just one Elk. I want an nyala or a kudo more than any other animal more exp or not I think those are the coolist and of course a warthog :)

rbrown, I know this is the hog forum, but sine you're a big kudu fan (like me) - double-lunged him and watched him go down 80 yards away. Happened on July 11th and I'm still on cloud nine, a thrill of a lifetime. Try to make it happen!

Nice hog, got this one last year. They are tough, as im sure you found out. Im guessing since you didnt eat it that you didnt dress it either. Your lucky because they are a pain in the a$$ to dress, took a pic of the hide to show how thick and tough it is. Best way to eat them is to make it into a stew and slow cook it.

Britt, stateside I only do DIY hunts, so obviously I dress and skin everything - but I've never heard of anyone dressing and skinning their game in Africa. Who was your outfitter....?

I took it off a reserve to manage the population, it was a DIY since I was doing some research in the reserve. Hunting is not allowed there but the hogs are an invasive species so the reserve director implemented a population control program (i.e. shoot them) to keep them in control.
