Just got back yesterday from 5 days away hunting fallow deer. I have access to a great place and am lucky to be able to invite some extras once a year to enjoy hunting the fallow deer rut with me. We shoot a few does with the rifles to provide meat for camp but for the most part it is bows for the bucks. I got a button buck and a 4 year old cull with my bow and I was very happy. one of my mates hunted extra hard and was extra lucky and scored two amazing bucks with his bow. The biggest buck of the week was shot by a 12 year old with his new .308 model seven (we figured he was allowed a rifle being so young). The young bloke also shot a spikey with his bow but unfortunately we never found the body even though we were able to follow blood for over 500 metres :(

Congratulations on another successful hunt. Looks like you have some great hunting opportunities. Do you ever hunt water buffalo or pig? I have always wanted to make it down there someday for a hunting and spearfishing trip.

G'day
I try and get up North and hunt pigs each year, it is great fun and pretty cheap hunting, but I have never had a go at buffalo. The buff are in areas that are controlled by outfitters (for the most part) and they are worth a fair bit of money to the outfitters and the locals. I just can't bring myself to pay money to kill what is essentially a feral animal. Yes, I know they are game, and I know how much hunting is worth to the economy and all that, but I just don't have enough desire to need to spend the money they are asking. :)
Hunting and fishing is as good a reason as any to visit Oz, we have plenty of both :) Getting guns into the country (unless you use an outfitter) can be a real drag, but bows and spearguns are almost unregulated and hunting licences are few and cheap :)

Always enjoy reading your posts. Looks like a great time this year (as usual). I bet dinners around that campfire are spectacular! That looks like one very happy lad, and rightly so.

Crossbows are prohibited weapons in most of Australia and you have to licence them just like you do your rifles. In most states you can hunt with them but you have to jump through plenty of hoops to get there.
Bringing a crossbow over on a hunt would be a real pain in the backside.
I know very few people who hunt with one. By the time they have gone through all the red tape they might as well have bought a rifle, and most just go down that road instead.

On the other hand bows (compound or trad) are just thought of as sporting equipment and except for some security stuff at the airports (signing them over and to get them back) you have very few issues with traveling around with them.

Good to see hunters from other countries keeping the heritage alive. We all come from hunting heritage (I dont think there were ever vegetarian cavemen), so thank you for keeping it alive in this current era of anti-hunting and anti-gun. Keep up the good work! :toast-yellow:

It never ceases to amaze me that although we live in the driest inhabited continent on earth it always seems to rain on our deer camp....
