Yesterday (the 6th) I officially started my 2005 shed season.
I planned on doing some scouting in my areas and checking things out.I really didn't think I'd find any sheds this early in the year.
I saw plenty of deer including a small piebald ,but only one buck. The only brown I saw on the piebald was on it's the head.
While trying to get a pic of the piebald I almost stepped on a shed,a fresh 3pt. side.
Ten minutes later and not 100yds. later in the same area I spotted my second shed of the day. This one a small fresh 3pt. side and no match to the first.
After finding these 2 sheds I gave the area a good looking over then moved onto another spot.
At this new spot I ending up finding 2 more fresh sheds not 30yds. away from each other.I'm almost certain these are a matching set.A nice little 8pt. rack.
So,after day one that was suppose to be a scouting mission I end up with 4 fresh sheds.

Today I headed back out in a different area altogether. My first find today I spotted it from about 75yds. away.At first I thought it was a dead buck the way the tines stuck up.It was a massive 4pt. side with a small sticker coming off the base.I tried putting a tape on this one and came up with more or less 60".Not bad for a shed in my areas.
While trying to find the mate to this shed I found a small Y shed.I covered the area around the big 4pt. side about half, but only had a couple hours to look today.I'll be back out at first light tomorrow to give the area a good looking over.If I find this other half, this matching set will be right up there with my biggest sets I already have.

Sounds like a great outing. It's possible the 'piebald' was a true albino. Could you tell if the piebald was a buck or a doe? Perhaps it was a yearling buck. All bucks rub their head on trees, and this can lead to coloring between the "antlers"

As soon as I get my computer right I'll get some pics posted. My computer won't accept my plug-in to transfer pics from camera to computer.I never go shedhunting with out the camera.
I made it back out today to try and find the other half to the big 4pt. side,no luck.
I did find a small old 4pt. shed from last year. While looking a saw 8 buck still carrying both sides and 3 with only half a rack. All the half rack buck were small racks and the ones carrying both sides were bigger racks??

Buck Stopper-that piebald looked like this years deer, small deer. The brown on the head didn't look like it was from rubbing.More of a brown/white mix all around the head.
I think it was a button buck myself. While I was watching the deer it mounted another deer.

Good job deershed.I am going to start looking tomorrow (sunday).I had some fellas down here in pocomoke yesterday and today for the 2 day gun season and 2 large deer were shot that these guys thought were big does.Turned out to be bucks that had shed.

One was pretty well scabbed over but the other was just starting to scab over.Still was some tender meat there at the pedicle site.

I made another trip back to look for that other half to the 4pt. side, nothing.I did find 2 more sheds since my last posting in here. Both were old sheds from last year.
Here's a couple pics. This first one is my total so far for this yr. minus my last shed I found that's not in pic.I got my first matching set for the yr. in upper top right of pic.
The second pic is the big 4pt. side as it layed and the last is the piebald I saw.
The piebald pic wasn't that good, but it shows all the white on deer.Notice how the head was blocked out altogether, only brown was there.

I shed hunt suburbian deer.I couldn't tell you how many deer per mile, but it's alot. With shed hunting city deer sheds comes it's problems though.
There's lots of competetion from other shed hunters for starters. And some deer run off and drop in those 10 acre yards,so some homeowners get some sheds too.
My biggest concerns are the sharp shooters that come in and shoot the deer.In many of my areas they come in to help thin the herds.I hear alot of them target the bigger buck for the racks.

Thanks for the information. I do,nt have much competition here. The deer herd is way down in numbers. Buck to doe ratio is way out of whack.About 10 does to 1 buck. Iguess I,m finished until spring, we just got about a foot or more of snow today in a blizzard. Post more pics of sheds when you find them. I like the as they laid pics.

It's been awhile since I've updated this.I"ve had snow pretty much since my last time in here.Since the middle of jan. up until last tues. my total was 14 sheds.
Tues. I headed back out and snow was all but gone.
My first find of the day was a small dead buck that died while still in velvet. One side was busted off with a piece of the skull missing where the antler was.About 100yds. further away I found the missing antler. The deer must have ran the 100 yds. after the antler busted off and died from the injury.
My second find of the day was a nice 4pt side w/3 small stickers around the base spotted about 150yds. away while driving down the farm lane.
While searching the hedgerow along side the field for it's mate I found a matched set off a nice 8 pointer laying together. This set has some really nice bladed brow tines.
Over the hill in the same field that I found the shed from the farm lane I found another nice 4pt. side this one with 2 small stickers around the base.I thought it was the mate to the first shed, but both antlers came off different deer.
Next while walking out a small finger from the bottom I found 3 more sheds,2 3pt. sides and a spike.
It was a little while before my next shed. This one was a nice old 5pt. side buried in the grass. The faded white tines were spotted about 75yds. away.
My next 2 sheds were both fresh spike sheds.
11 sheds total for the day with one matched set.

The next day I headed back to the same area for a few hours to search some corn stubble next to this area looking for mates to these sheds.I managed to find the mate off the farm lane shed laying in the corn and another 4pt. side,no match to any of the day before.
The first shed the that was the mate was a 4pt. side w/2 small stickers.

I headed back out again on thur. to a different area I had already searched and found 2 more.
My new total now for Md. sheds is 29 sheds with 3 matched sets.
Here's a few pics.
