My finds are starting to pick up so I figured I better get this started before I fall too far behind.

My first trip of the year this year was late compared to the last couple years,it was Jan. 14th this year. This first day out I'd been looking for about an hour and ready to give up on an early find when I found my first shed of the year,a nice fresh 4pt side.

1stFreshOne07-121.jpg

It wasn't long and not too far away when I spotted another fresh drop.Another 4pt. side, but not a match to the first antler found.

2ndshed1.jpg

I was seeing alot of buck still carrying and no more sheds.

My next trip out was to a different area.A saw alot of buck still carrying both sides in this area too.
I spent more time watching the buck still carrying trying to get some good pics and about that time the batteries in the camera went dead.I did find one fresh shed first, another fresh 4pt side.

A closer look at the same shed.

My next time out I was back where I made my first trip of the year.My day started off hot finding 2 sheds in the first 1/2 hour then looking 4 more hours without anymore sheds.
The first shed was a little fresh Y shed.

4thshed.jpg

Then a fresh 3pt. side

5thshed2.jpg

My next trip an all day hunt I found 5 sheds (3 old and 2 fresh sheds) 2 dead spikes and added a fresh turtle shell to my collection. My first stop for the day was in an area I've looked before, but never found much. There I first found an old 3pt. side.

6th072.jpg

Next was the turtle shell followed by the first dead spike.

SpikeGame.jpg

I then moved to another area for a quick search. Here I found an old chewed up shed and the second dead spike buck.

SpikeGame-1.jpg

After the last spike find I moved to another area.My serach started off great here finding a fresh 4pt sides in the first 5 minutes.

8th07Brinks.jpg

I no sooner started walking again and not 75yds. away I spotted some more tines sticking up.

9th073.jpg

My last shed for the this trip was an old 3pt. side

I made one last trip last friday before the snow came.Fri. was a pretty good day finding 4 sheds. One shed was the mate to my first shed found for the year and 2 others were a matched set.Today's trip was back to my first spot I checked for the year.I started off finding an old chewed shed,no "as it layed" pic. Then after looking for awhile I spotted some nice white tines sticking up.I knew right away I already had the other side to this one.

This was the mate to the shed at the top of this page,my first shed found this year.

IMG_1532.jpg

Working a hillside down away from this first find I spotted shed #3 for the day.

IMG_1535.jpg

After a few more passes going across the hillside about 150yds away from the last shed,I found it's mate.

IMG_1540.jpg

Here's all the sheds from the day.

And a pic after getting home matching up the other set.

What....no snow! Seriously though, those sheds in the oak leaves, look super hard to spot. Good job so far, I'm glad to see you got the journal going, since your the man that started the trend.

Thanks guys, let the season begin.Good Luck everyone!!
For anyone doing a shed journal. At the bottom of your page each time you add to your journal, post a running count of your total finds. That way we can follow your season all the way.
I know for some (Predator 1) it might be hard keeping track finding so many.

firemcw-I wish that was one day's worth.

That was 5 different days worth.

Congrats Deershed, looking forward to more pics. Snow is to deep here now, sheds are all buried in snow, plus it has been very cold, colder than normal.

Made another trip yesterday (Thur.) and found 3 more sheds.I had to really fight to get through some snow at some places.
<

My first find was just a little spike almost buried in the snow.If you look close in the first pic the shed is dead center in the middle of pic.

shed1807.jpg

shed18207.jpg

My next find was another one sitting in some snow.I spotted this one from about 50yds away.A average 4pt side.

shed1907.jpg

I was beat walking through all the snow so I moved to an area snow free.
<
A little 3pt side with some mass.

Great year so far. Are you finding them on the edges of fields or do you find a lot up in the woods? You got a good eye. Let's hear some stories with some of those buck pics. Some of them are dandys

Alot of my sheds come from wooded areas.
I looked most the day yesterday in the same area I've been looking hoping some of the buck I've been seeing dropped. All I found was one fresh drop and another turtle shell with the outter shell and color still all there.

shed21207.jpg

I saw these along with some other buck, but couldn't figure out where some of the bigger buck got to.

that is a great story with some great pictures.
I have been out twice this year with no success. The areas that I am hitting are loaded with deer(well at least I think). I have been concentrating on food sources and major trails and creek crossings. What are some tips you would give a shed hunting rookie.

Remember it's still early and alot of buck are still carrying. If they haven't dropped yet you won't be finding too many.Be careful you don't pressure the deer and move them out of your area you can search.
Follow the trails back to the bedding areas once you know the buck have shed. And stick with the major trails, but don't be affraid to cover everything.I hit the high percentage areas first then cover all the area.Any where that buck could go could be a possible location for a shed.

Good luck and Welcome to the boards!!

My areas got hit with that snow and ice we got last week so not much is happening here now.I went out yesterday to do a little scouting and see where the deer have been and possible places to check after some snow melt. While searching my first area I realized fast the deer were walking on top of the snow and not breaking through the crust of ice on top of the snow.Pretty creepy seeing droppings and no tracks.I would see tracks, but for the most part the deer would leave very little sign as far as tracks.
If any deer would have dropped since the snow the sheds would have stood out like a sore thumb sitting on top,no way they'd have buried. If they dropped on a side hill they could easily slid 100yds before coming to a rest.
Every year I find a few fresh sheds then it seems there's a slack period before I find more when the majority start dropping. That time happens to be now or this snow would be great.Anyway, when the snow does start to melt the sheds should be there.
Here's some pics from yesterday.

There's a little piebald in this one.

ALittlePiebald.jpg

Here's the first area where there weren't many tracks in the snow, but plenty of sign the deer were there.

Droppings3.jpg

The second area the tracks were a different story.

Great photos deershed! We finally had a day in the 40's and lost quite a bit of snow today.I've been out but it's hard to find them in knee deep snow but I keep looking.I did find a real nice set a few days or so ago the best part is I have a set from the same buck from last year.
