Friend and fellow JHO member(AmericanPittBullTerrier) and I are headed to Big Horn Canyon on the 20th to try and get some hogs. Now I know how most of you feel about this ranch, and I have to admit I've had my reservations as well. The plans for this trip started last year when I took APBT out to some of my public land hunting spots to try and get his catch dogs on some pigs. As you might expect we didn't get anything, (something I've grown acustom to) but to a newbie hunter it was discouraging to APBT. So I suggested he look into some private ranches, and BHC was one of the names I threw at him. He made some calls and BHC was the only one that would allow him to take his dogs. He told me lets go and I'll buy you a hog too. So I said hell yeah, lets go. We are leaving Friday and will be back Sunday, hopefully with some great stories and pics. Wish us luck.

Thanks again to APBT for your generosity, you are a great friend. I'll get the gas and beer!

Cool, I'll guarantee you that his dogs won't have any problem catching a pig there.

I know someone with some hog dog experience will add their comments, but wouldn't it be good to save as much of the blood from both hogs as well as both hides so APBT will be able to do some drags and blood trails well after the hogs have been killed???

Also, as it sounds like you know what you're getting yourself into, make sure you know what the rules are going to be since you're using dogs. If a dog takes a bite out of a hog, is it automatically bought? I say this only becuase I've heard the hogs don't move too much at that ranch (no personal experience, just word of mouth) and are easy to get up on and I wonder if you let the dogs go and they go after more than one hog what are you liable for...Does that make sense???

Let us know how this goes...

Yeah, I've heard the stories of the "barnyard" animals, but thats the reason I suggested BHC. I wanted to make sure he got his dogs on some pigs.

As far as the hides and blood goes, I have no clue. The hog dog thing is more his deal than mine. I'll be taking mine with a rifle. I plan on asking many questions and getting everything squared away before the hunt. I hope all goes well.

There has to be cheaper ways to train his dogs. You can buy a hog at the fair for around $150, take him in the woods (or backyard) and train the dogs (don't know the legalities of this).

Shot, We considered doing that, but as you stated we didn't know the legalities either. We just didn't think it would be a smart thing to do. A dying pig makes a lot of noise and may attract unwanted spectators.

Why? How much to have a hog in Big Horn Ranch?

beastslayer, We are hoping to get a couple of their "Russian" hogs. I believe they are going for 425 or 450. The "barnyard" variety are 325 or 350. Don't quote me though.

Eric,

I've actually seen pictures of the Russian hogs in an achery shop down at Riverside. And they are nasty looking. Would look good on the wall -- well, except that might not be exactly the conversation piece with the way some people here describe the kind of hunting there is out there. No, don't misunderstood me. I have nothing against that. For me, it's to each his own.

I'll, in fact, appreciate if you'll provide pictures and stories about your hunt.

Are you talking about the prunedale auction where they sell animals or somewhere else that sells hog from breeders.

beastslayer, If I do get a big tusker I will more than likely just do a euro mount, but I'll be looking for a meat pig. I will definitely post up pics and a story.

I can't imagine turning dogs loose in that little place, seems like all it would do is piss off the other shooters. Its going to be confusing for the dogs and the shooters, the pigs have no where to run except in a 1/4 mile circle, no offense meant, I've been there, can't wait for the follow up story !

...The way I see it .... this is the fastest way to train my dogs to stay away from junk animals. I had a good spot on the Indian res until I got booted by the tribal police. Going after farm hogs isn't what I'm going for....hopeing to get the Russains. We'll see how it goes.

Even though they have Russian looking pigs there, they are by no mean close to being wild. The one time I made the mistake of going there I actually sat on one of the pigs while it slept, and it was a hairy mean looking Russian pig.

I am telling you this not because I want to ruin your plans but instead to let you know what you will see and experience. If you know all these things then great, there won't be any surprises and things should go smoothly for you guys.

Anyway, its always exciting to train a dog for hunting. Have Fun.
