Contact: Allan Buckmann, Wildlife Management , (707) 944-5530
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wild pig and turkey hunts will be offered at Lake Sonoma during the 2002-2003 hunting season. The 26 wild pig hunts will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from November 5, 2002 through March 25, 2003. In addition, four two-day wild turkey hunts will be offered; one junior and one adult hunt this fall, and one junior and one adult hunt this coming spring. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing these hunting opportunities in cooperation with the Department of Fish and Game.
Wild Pig Hunt Success: 2001-2002 pig hunter success increased significantly over previous years. Overall, some 527 hunters took 80 pigs for an overall success rate of 15%. Archery: 185 archers took 11 wild pigs for a success rate of 6%. Shotgun-slug: 247 shotgun-slug hunters took 30 wild pigs for a success rate of 12%. Rifle: 84 rifle hunters took 22 wild pigs for a success rate of 16%. The 2002-03 season success rate is questionable as we had a dry spring and pig numbers usually decline during this condition.
Hunt Periods: The 26 wild pig hunts are divided into two hunt periods. The first period contains 8 archery hunts (Area 1, Tuesdays) and 3 rifle hunts (Area 2, Wednesdays) and runs from November 5, 2002 to January 8, 2003. The second period has 11 shotgun-slug hunts (Area 1, Tuesdays) and 4 rifle hunts (Area 2, Wednesdays) and runs from January 14, 2003 to March 25, 2003.
Permits: Hunting permits are required. Fifteen permits will be drawn for each hunt date. Each permit is good for two (2) hunters. Applications: Applicants may apply for only one hunt in each hunt period. Submit a standard Postal Service postcard (one name per card) with name, address, telephone #, hunting license #, and hunt date requested. Send applications to:
