DFG Announces Wild Pig & Turkey Hunts at Lake Sonoma

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Contact: Allan Buckmann, Wildlife Management , (707) 944-5530

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wild pig and turkey hunts will be offered at Lake Sonoma during the 2002-2003 hunting season. The 26 wild pig hunts will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from November 5, 2002 through March 25, 2003. In addition, four two-day wild turkey hunts will be offered; one junior and one adult hunt this fall, and one junior and one adult hunt this coming spring. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing these hunting opportunities in cooperation with the Department of Fish and Game.

Wild Pig Hunt Success: 2001-2002 pig hunter success increased significantly over previous years. Overall, some 527 hunters took 80 pigs for an overall success rate of 15%. Archery: 185 archers took 11 wild pigs for a success rate of 6%. Shotgun-slug: 247 shotgun-slug hunters took 30 wild pigs for a success rate of 12%. Rifle: 84 rifle hunters took 22 wild pigs for a success rate of 16%. The 2002-03 season success rate is questionable as we had a dry spring and pig numbers usually decline during this condition.

Hunt Periods: The 26 wild pig hunts are divided into two hunt periods. The first period contains 8 archery hunts (Area 1, Tuesdays) and 3 rifle hunts (Area 2, Wednesdays) and runs from November 5, 2002 to January 8, 2003. The second period has 11 shotgun-slug hunts (Area 1, Tuesdays) and 4 rifle hunts (Area 2, Wednesdays) and runs from January 14, 2003 to March 25, 2003.

Permits: Hunting permits are required. Fifteen permits will be drawn for each hunt date. Each permit is good for two (2) hunters. Applications: Applicants may apply for only one hunt in each hunt period. Submit a standard Postal Service postcard (one name per card) with name, address, telephone #, hunting license #, and hunt date requested. Send applications to:

Lake Sonoma Pig Hunt
P. O. Box 47
Yountville, CA 94599

Drawings: Only two drawings will be held, one for each hunt period. The first period drawing will be held October 4, 2002. Applications must be received in the Yountville Regional office by 5:00 p.m. October 3, 2002. The second period drawing will be held on December 13, 2002. Applications must be received in the Yountville Regional office by 5:00 p.m. December 12, 2002. Only successful applicants will be notified.

I guess it's time to go visit my folks and old friends in NoCal. Maybe mix in some work and do a little piggie hunting, now that would be cool. grew up in the area(Santa Rosa) but didn't get interested in hunting 'til the last couple of years and this year is my first hunt at 31 no less! I tell my wife i am doing it for our Kids :D...which is true.

Mudhen, that's a long way to come for some Bass??????????

40+ herd??? Outstanding. That place has some pigs!

They mentioned that the dry Spring is cause for a population decline, but if you saw 40+ that sounds like a lot in a herd.
