I'm asking this as a question there is no right or wrong answers.

On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate the difficulty of hog hunting vs say deer, antelope, elk, bears Ect: you name it what ever you have hunted, on either public or private land.

Some guideline, distance of shot, animals senses, terrain, with standing the shot.

I'll give you my feeling down the road.

On Public Land, I'd rate hog hunting a definite 10 as the most difficult big game I've hunted. I have opportunities every year on whitetail, blacktail, and mule deer. But while I've chased hogs on public land for almost seven years now, I still haven't had a shot. I can find fresh sign, bedding areas, feeding routes... but a well-educated hog is a danged hard-to-get animal.

Or maybe I just haven't found the "honey-hole" yet. I'm sure if I had a hot spot on public land (I know they must exist), I'd lower the score a bit.

On private land, the difficulty level drops off significantly and I would say they're about the same as deer.

I can't compare them to any other big game. I don't hunt bear, sheep, goats, or antelope, and I've only hunted elk once with an extreme dose of luck.

On public land hunting wild boar is definatley a 10...
I have hunted deer and elk on public land in idaho and they are a lot eaiser...
Idaho terrian is moutians with bowls, cayons, sagerush, snow, ect... I think hunting there is a lot easier b/c there is so much good public land.. For mulies out ther the shot usally has be like 450 yard ( My dad's shots, i cant shot that far accuratly enough yet) to 70 yards.... Elk are about the same distance but they are a lot harder hunt b/c they are usally on the ridges of the moutians... And deer in california little more shy i think it is bc they have a lot more huntin pressure... Thats my

Yep, I agree with Speck. But i'll add one thing, hogs are a 10 on with standing the shot. Hogs are about the hardest thing to kill, that i've hunted anyway. If you don't hit them exactly in the right spot, good luck, they are one tough animal to take down.

Do to a lack of pigs on public land in Ca. I would rate the hunting as a 8-10, on PP a 2-4 at best non guided, and a 1 guided.

I Have hunted pigs on public land maybe 4-5 times 15-20 years ago and that was enought for me, I never fired a shot I might as well been hunting Rhinos.

IMHO pigs do not come close to say deer or elk as far as senses go so they would be a 6-7 overall.

Mel I do not find pigs that hard to kill, but then again I do not take lung shots on pigs, head, neck, shoulder in that order most pigs can be shot at under 70 yards if you take your time, I have never had a pig go more then 50 yards after a hit, (knock on wood) I have never lost a pig, where I have seen elk go 1/4-1/2 mile with a lung shot, my feeling is most people shoot pigs to far back.

This is what we do sometimes while bow hunting for hogs, do not know about in your state but we are aloud to hunt them at night, so if we have a good moon, I like to sit about 20-30 yards away from a pond or water source that they may frequent, let them come in and get settled down pick a spot and then let the carbon fly. Also we will sit on known paths where they funnel thru a opening in a fence.
