I'm looking at the Nikon D70 or the Canon EOS 300D(rebel) and was wondering if anyone has any experience with either one of these cameras. Or if there are any other affordable lower end dslr's.

I have read lots of reviews on DPreview and steve's digi, but I think I would value someones opinion from here a little higher.

My thanks to anyone who gives an opinion good or bad.

I think it would be hard to give a definitive answer. I usually lean towards the canon camp, but mainly because I like the way a couple of their big zooms and big primes perform. Actually when you get down to it, you are committing to a lens system more so than a camera body. I think the word on the street is that canon is further ahead, but that is just what I hear (and most of it is biased).

I dont have a dslr yet, but I will be getting one in the near future. It will probably be a canon, with canon lenses.

Hi Zach,

I just purchased the Digital Rebel(Lens Kit) about a month and a half ago. It's a great camera, just took a little bit of getting used to.I read all of those reviews also, which helped me lean towards the canon, not to say Nikon isn't a great camera. My buddy has a D100,and it's great, just a little out of my price range for right now.I also bought an canon ef 75-300mm lens,it's nice but not powerful enough for what I need.I need atleast a 600 or 800 mm so I can get right on top of those big bucks with out spooking them.I am sure you will be happy with the digital rebel once you start using it,I know I am and don't regret getting one.If you would like to seem some pics I took with it ,you can go to my web site(I know they aren't great, but I'm happy with them) www.geocities.com/darin1762/home.html I hope I could help you out some.Have a great day. Darin

My problem is that I have a Nikon n70 35mm and if I get a nikon I believe that I can use the lense with the digital. Would have to get a different lense for animals but money is a problem.

Which would be best for me?

Darin, thanks for the input and welcome to JHO! Those are nice looking pics, I especially like the cow siloutte in the sky.

Lan-lord, thanks for your input also. I currently have a Minolta 35mm, so I'll be starting from scratch with the lenses.

I think I'm going to try and find a place locally that rents both cameras and see if I can give them both a try.

Thanks Zach,I get alot of good comments on the cow. It's one of my favorites also.I'm just now getting the hang of it,I have been trying to learn everything I can about photography. One of these days I want to make some trips out west, seems like you guys have all kinds of things to take pics of out there.I liked your muley pics, they are on my short list of things to bow hunt.

Thanks also Dan,I really like this site,it's really cool.I stumbled on it by looking for a game camera (cuddeback digital)Looks like you are quite the bow hunter, nice buck you had,I also liked how you had your pics layed out.I need to do something different with mine,I have been thinking about getting on pbase or something, the one you are on looks pretty good also.

Hey Cliff.I am pretty sure you can use your Nikon lenses on a Nikon dslr.I know I can use all of canon's ef lenses on my digital rebel. What did you mean buy "which would be the best for me?" ?What Nikon to go with?I would say that the D70 and D100 are both excellent cameras.I would also read every review I could about them.

I hope to talk to all of you guys and everyone else later.Have a great day.

I wish! I have a canon Rebel 2000 film camera and I love it, it's the finest film camera I've ever owned. I imagine the digital rebel is even nicer, but at $999 I don't think I'll be picking one up anytime soon. Ever since taking that photography class last semester I feel spoiled, now I only want the best Digital SLRs lol nothing else will do after that

Ok, now I'm looking at the Canon 10D. I've pretty much got the wife talked into it. So it's back and forth between the 300D and the 10D. I'm willing to spend the extra $$ if it's worth it.

Anyone out there use a 10D?

If you're looking at the 10D you might entertain the idea of getting the Digital Rebel and putting the Wasia hack firmware on it that enables some of the functions (most) that the 10D offers over the 300D. Turns out Canon basically uses the same electronics on both cameras and cripples the Rebel to offer it at a lower cost. Check out www.dpreview.com forums for more info.
