Last May 25, 2009 I posted a new thread entitled "DIY Public Land Success" and it's taken me more than a year to bag another public land hog with a bow - except for the warthog I took three weeks ago in Africa (see "Dangerous Hog Down") - it's been a lucky summer for me. This one wasn't as big as the spotted hogzilla I took last year, but it should be real good eatin' and anything public in Southern California is a victory for me. I'd been seeing sign and even hearing these wild pigs for some time and finally this one gave me a shot at a little after 7:00pm. A nice quartering away opportunity at 22 yards resulting in a perfect double lung (pass thru) shot. The sow bolted left and then disappeared. Now I'm thinking, great it's getting dark... I gave it a few minutes, found my arrow covered in blood and an awesome blood trail to boot (maybe the best pig blood trail ever). The hog turned in a half-circle pattern and didn't go more than 20 yards! That's the good news. The bad news is that when you shoot a wild hog on public land they're frequently in very difficult places to get out - this was no exception. With some back-up help (after a few phone calls) and a little over two hours later, the pig was finally in my truck - very hard work, but also very rewarding. Tipping the scales at just over 200lbs, should make some tasty table fare. (apologies for the blood, honestly just too tired to touch it up for the photos).
