Well boyz, this may have been my most rewarding hog hunt ever, for a few reasons: 1. DIY, 2. public land, 3. with a bow, and 4. SOUTHERN California. That's right fellas, southern CA. YA-FREAKIN'-WHO!! I've been looking, on and off, for a couple of years now, but like most other southern California hunters - no luck. Then I put out my trail/game cam a few places and low and behold - wild hogs!! Took me about a month to pattern there behavior and one unsuccessful try, and then success on my second try. The shot was made at about 7:45pm, found two spots of blood and my arrow (complete pass thru), but the sun was setting fast so I went back at first light the next day. Took about an hour because this big sow headed for thick cover, but recovered her only about 20 yards from where I hit her. The shot was 24 yards downhill into a ravine which made for a nightmare of a drag-out. Almost everone I know was gone for the holiday (or nursing an injury), so it took me three (3) hours to get it back to my truck - a very tough go of it. Without the head, two front legs, guts and all the fatty skin, she weighed out at 186lbs - the butcher said it would have weighed between 250 and 275lbs - don't know about that, but it seemed every bit of that when I was trying to get the damn thing out.
