As many of you know, i prefer to use my bow.......but when SacFireJT offered up his ranch for the weekend
<
, i figured my 7mm could some time in the woods after being in its case for a few years. So with a call to LD, we hit the road hoping to chase down a pig or two.

Here's LD doing what he does best.

Even with a rifle, i'm still in bow hunting mode. I could have shot this hog at 190, 150, 140 and so on...but figured i'd see how close i could get. At 65 yards i pulled the trigger and dropped what is by far, my largest hog to date.

Thanks to SacFireJT for allowing LD and myself to hunt his ranch

I made it back to the truck with two quarters and was suprised to see LD walking down the road. His hunt ended a bit early as the water source he was going hunt by, was dried up. Unloading our gear and figuring out what we needed for the next haul of meat, we started talking about the few times we've doubled up on hogs when a black stump in the cayon below started to move................we hit the road running (well, LD was kinda speed walking as he's got a torn hamstring) to get in front of the hog.

LD, she's all yours......................

. After seeing Hogzilla Jr.
<
, AS and myself guickly traded weapons, I was orginally using the 870 Scatter Gun and with the 7mm in hand AS ran and I hobbled up to the next ridgeline hopeing to cut off the moving hog. We set up and got into position, I took rest on a fallen log and was waiting for the hog to make his way out and down hill in front of us. To our surprise he wasn't by himself and had four friends in tow. Hogzilla was moving at a pretty good clip and so I decided to shoot the 2nd pig in-line which was slowed up and grazing. Put the cross hairs on it's chest and squeezed the trigger.

BAM, the pig drops, squells, and takes off running. AS watched it run a coupled hundred yards up into the tree line and across the canyon. We took note of where it was last seen and decided the next morning would give us a better chance of finding it.

We had a little "drinking" celebration last night after hiking out AS's HUGE pig and my shot on another great looking pig.

So this morning after a good blood trail and a 1/2 mile tracking job the blood petered out into nothing. No pig.

Lost a pig, had a great time, next time!

Yeah, sorry about loosing your hog. From the looks of his tracks, i don't think he ever slowed down and kept-a-runnin. We blood trailed the whole morning and after it dried up, we started walking canyons looking for sign and hopefully a dead hog. Saw some good areas for future hunts.

Next time............

as a side note.....i just got off the phone w/ two JHO'ers that did the damn near impossible: a public land hog!!! They've got one hanging and headin' back to stack up a couple more. Good luck boys!

No sir.......they sink!!

Making what i originally thought was a wonderful shot, the pigs shoulder was gone and unfortunately on his downhill leg. Well, that leg was what was keeping him upright on the hill......after a short slide and into the drink, the pond went silent. There was way too much mud to see where he was, so i was up to my waist using my shooting sticks as a probe, feeling for my sunken buddy. The stix found something and i reached deep into the water.....pulling up the leg and then the body, i knew getting'em outta the pond would not be easy or fun. The bank was too steep where he fell in, so i had to drag'em the length of the pond to shallow water.
Lesson learned; if pig is near pond, don't shoot in shoulder!

I shot a 240 pounder at Choppers years ago, but this hog is definately bigger and the largest hog i've ever seen on the ground.
LD, what's your guess?

Bears sink too. My bear fell in a creek about three feet deep. Good job on the recovery. Are you talking dressed out weight or on the hoof weight?

Thanks guys!!! On the hoof one track......it's soo tough to guess a hogs weight, i always guess on the low range. Ahh, who cares, it's gonna be some good sausage and jalenpeno/cheddar links. Should be done by July when you boys head up.

Oh...I'd guess that hog to be in the 250# class AS. The hog in my avatar went 250...we had a scale in camp.

AS's hog is the biggest hog I've ever seen dead. He prides himself on taking good photos but the pictures don't do that sow any justice. I say 300lb., no BS.
