Has anyone gone to New Zealand put together any hunts for birds, big game, varmits, or depredations on their own? The country has lots of open land and a do it yourself hunt looks possible.

We got plenty of info for hunting DOC land. Our plans were interupted and we couldn't go. I plan on going after tahr in winter, hiking up to them. Maybe next may or june. Perhaps with a bow.
Glass eye, The best way to hunt Tahr in the South Island by bow is with an Apache Longbow.
Seriously tho, It would be very hard work but not impossible.
It would be very worth your while to check out this site www.fishnhunt.co.nz and become a member of the forum as it is a wealth of local knowledge and experience. There is alot of bantering and opinions expressed but looking past that it is a good resource. You may even be able to team up with some locals that would save you alot of lost hunting time and could well result in a sucessful bow hunt. Likewise in the North Island for Red and Sika deer. This is a shortcut to a Tahr hunt posted http://www.fishnhunt.co.nz/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1180082241
The "do it yourself hunt" as Tuledude mentioned is the way the we hunt here as there is no real cost involved apart from gearing up and the cost of a chopper if you decide to fly in (generally about NZ$1300 per trip). We do not have "season tags" for different species or charged by the antler point.
All you need is a firarms licence and a hunting permit (free). Hut fees are $8 per night. Fly camping is free.
Please note that I am not trying to take anything away from "safari" type arranged hunts as there is a place for both.
I trust either way you will enjoy your Kiwi experience.
That's a good one! but how sweet would it be to pull it off !
I am a member of Alan's forum, I'm glass eye there also. I've talked with alot of kiwi's on there and they've been very helpful. Weathered seems to be the tahr expert. What's your name on that forum ?

Have seen your posts and you are well on your way.
If you are coming all this way then it would be a good opportunity to hunt Sika in the Kaimanawa's near Lake Taupo and/or Red in the Ureweras between Lake Taupo and Rotorua in the central North Island. Definite bow hunts.
Weathered is the man to take you as long as his health holds out.
Have a look at www.airchartertaupo.co.nz and www.lakelandheli.co.nz
All the best.
