Do it yourself ?

I would love to go elk hunting, So would about 5 more of my friends.
I know several people who go every year to a place in Co ,were a man
who owns a mountain and charges them a fee to hunt his land,not a guided hunt.
But no one will share his name''they are not friends''.i would like to know a few public places to go, or were to find info on were to go.I guess if i start know i might be able to make a hunt next year.

well welcome to elk hunting. for one what do you plain to hunt with? rifle bow or b.p.? here where I hunt in Washington is open to public BUT it's black powder or bow only. now the catch is in b.p. the season is from nov.1 to jan.31!

no bull and on bow the month of octber. very burshy area but lots of elk... last year I myself counted over 50 in the herd mostly cows. nice thing is that it is any elk hunt. last year I missed a 5x6. year before got a 1100 bl. cow. all me and my uncil could do to back it out! the area is the 941. in skagit county mostly flat but swappy and brushy. if you're fermiler with wa. it's east of sedro-woolley. let me know if this helps you. is there a web site for washington fish and game? So i can find out
about the cost of hunting licenes.

hi yes they do I belive it's washington fish and wildlife .com not to shure on the address. for non resandt it's around if I remember is like 300-500. for your tag. the hunt would be in october. from the 1st. to the 31. in the 941 area. I my self never hunted bow so I don't know what all the laws are. only no macnicle bord heads. most guys use around 6-75 lb. draw on there bow. and ether 4-3 way heads form 140 -160 I think. well let me look in the rules book to find out for shure ok. now for black powder. 50-62 cal. using lead only bulletts that way over 235grns. like sabots or conicals. most use sabots. guns set up for #11 caps exposed to the elements. pellets or gaanuls. that's it. mosst shots are from 20-100 yards. I my self use a bufflo bullet co. 310 grn. hollow point sabot with 100 grns. of blackpowder. very deadly on elk... or a t/c 435 grn. maxi ball. with same charge in a c.va. 54 cal hawkens rifle. and for b.p. the season open on nov.1st.-jan31. hope I helped you. hi I got the rule book. for nonres. elk is $394.20 plus a 1.00 fee for dealer. ok on bows it is illegal to hunt big game with a bow that has less then a 40 lb. draw at 28 inches or less draw lanth. or has a greater than 65% reduction(let off) in holding weight at full draw. illegal to hunt with any arrow less than 20 inches. and weighing less then 6 grains per pound. with a min. weight of 300 grains on the arrow. having sharp blades less then 7/8 inches wide. with no barbs. and no crossbows. there ya go have fun Doug.

If you have 5 or more friends as a group you might want to check some good outfitters for their prices on Drop Camp hunts. They are a real bargain and a reliable Outfitter with good referrences will pack you in to a good area with the camp already set up. You'll hunt on your own and the Outfitter will check with you often if any animals need to be packed out.

If you want to get into a good area and hunt on your own that is the wy to go. Best part is that it won't break you in the process.

My friends and I may be giving it a try on CO next year or we may just go back to Oregon where the tags are reasonable and the Elk are plentiful just not real big for the most part in the area we hunt.
