I do not see a bunch of talk on here about it but I am sure with the population out there some fellas do it. Is it an accepted method of hunting in Cali? I know that I would have loved to have had my dogs with me when I hunted out at Vandenberg. There were a bunch of hogs and some beautiful areas that I could imagine the dogs baying up a big nasty central coast boar out there. :thumbs up2:

Lots of guys and outfitters run dogs in Cali. Personally, I never got into it. I have always enjoyed using dogs to hunt hogs and have taken a few using this method. Just watching dogs work is simply amazing to me. Lots of guys on here run dogs and I'm sure they will chime in...

There are a handfull of guys that post around here that run dogs in california like myself. There are more bear hunters however in northern california. There arent a lot of guys that run dogs on hogs because good properties are hard to find. There are plenty of guys that either want to run dogs or have dogs but no place to run them. Ive been pretty lucky over the years to have enough places to go to warrent having a pack of dogs of my own. You wont see a whole lot of chatter from us hogdoggers or houndsman cause were under the microscope by hunters and non-hunters alike.

bigboarstopper,

You wont see a whole lot of chatter from us hogdoggers or houndsman cause were under the microscope by hunters and non-hunters alike.
That's not the reason for me and most other houndsmen I know...it's cause we're generally too busy breeding the dogs, raising the dogs, feeding the dogs, scooping up after the dogs, training the dogs, hunting the dogs, or looking for the dogs to have much time for anything else! As you well know, it ain't a mere hobby, it's a lifestyle.

Here are just ten of the reasons to be proud to be a houndsman:

  1. The use of dogs for the pursuit of mammals was the motivation for the domestication of Man's Best Friend.
  2. The use of dogs for hunting is older than the bow and arrow, boomerang, blowgun, rifle, pistol, shotgun, or crossbow...pretty much older than every method but the friggin' rock or spear.
  3. Hound hunting was the pastime for many of America's founders and presidents including Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Teddy Roosevelt. I am honored to count these men as my brethren.
  4. Hound hunting has influenced American lexicon, having been the influence of such phrases as, "barking up the wrong tree", "threw me for a loop", "hot on the trail", "being hounded", and, "the trail went cold."
  5. Hound hunting is the only true method of catch-and-release hunting, where the focus is on the pursuit or catch rather than the kill.
  6. Hound hunting is the most humane form of hunting in that it provides the hunter with a shooting opportunity at very close range should he wish to take the animal. In the very unlikely event that the animal is merely wounded, the hounds can be used to locate it quickly.
  7. Hound hunting is a very "green" form of hunting in that it reinforces favorable conditions for the prosperity of wildlife; as an example, the size and sex of a bear can be most easily determined when caught by hounds which drastically reduces the number of females that are killed, the number of cubs that are orphaned, and the number of juveniles that are killed. Large, dominant boars are selectively sought after and harvested, which provides an opportunity for a larger percentage of juvenile bears to survive to maturity and actually increases the overall population.
  8. Hound hunting is the most effective means-traps and sharpshooters can be avoided-of resolving wildlife depredation of human activity (crops, livestock, water sources, etc) and addressing public safety situations in that it is the most effective means of reducing an overall population from a macro application, and is the most effective means of finding the exact perpetrator of a "crime" from a micro application of depredation mitigation.
  9. Hound hunting is the most natural, fair, sporting, and ethical form of hunting simply because the game being pursued evolved defenses specifically to evade pursuit or harm by a canine. Some of the behaviors and features of the game we pursue exist because of this interaction...the tenacity of the bear and hog, the cleverness of the coon, bobcat, and fox, and the endurance of a coyote are all traits we can be proud to have a connected legacy with.
  10. The ancestors of the game we hunt were fleeing the ancestor of the hound since the dawn of time; where else can you be witness to and participate in such ancient and enduring relationship. Only falconry.
In other words, we have nothing to be ashamed about. Engage in the art for the right reasons, love your dogs, love the game you hunt, honor the purity of the pursuit, respect the tradition and its history, educate the ignorant, defend it against the misguided, keep it safe and in trust for the next generation, and you will have nothing to hide from anybody.

In fact, now more than ever we must be vocal, active and vigilant if we are to continue to be able to enjoy this storied pastime. Trying to stay under the radar isn't going to cut it anymore.

Am I proud to be a houndsman? Hell yeah!!!

Rilfemen, The indians were here before the white and they had Bow and Arrows. The white men brought the dogs. I'm sure they may be some formed of dogs like Catahoulas if you read the history of the Catahoula and the Red wolf.

I assume you are responding to Reason#2. Please note that I was referring to the motivation behind the domestication of the dog which came about approximately 13-18,000 years before indians, whites, and Catahoulas.

bigboarstopper,
Wow..... Little insulted..... Rifleman pm sent.

No insult was intended whatsoever...I went back and read what I wrote and understand how my comments were misunderstood, but please know that they were directed more at those hunters and non-hunters that you referred to...those who would disparage, scrutinize, or otherwise put those of us who use dogs under the microscope you referred to.

Best Catch Dogs in the World

Hi guys. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is George Martinez and I am the owner of Facon Blanco Dogo Argentinos kennel in Gilbert Arizona. If anyone ever needs my services please do not hesitate to call. Here is my web page. www.faconblanco.com . Keep in mind that what I offer are CATCH DOGS not Bay Dogs. For the record, Bay Dogs are awsome and we use them as well, I just don't breed them. Thank you all for your time and Happy Hunting.

Welcome to JHO, George! I am glad to see another dog man join the ranks.

I had a Dogo several years ago and was very pleased with their tenacity with hogs but easy going nature around other dogs...hard to find with the other catch breeds.
