anybody hear of Doug's?

a friend found his guide service googling around, but I can't find any reviews or firsthand experiences with him.

in speaking with him through email, it seems as though he runs out of san diego, but has contracts with private land owners in central/norcal.

Doug's Wilderness Adventures/Horse Rides

the website is a little confusing to say the least.

It appears to be a fenced hunt. In one of their photos, it appears the pigs are eating out of a concrete trough (or drinking out of a guzzler). At the present, 90% success on a pig hunt in San Diego County is a pipe dream (unless it is a fenced hunt).

Can't say I have ever heard of his operation. Might be worth checking into.

The hunt is a high fenced operation geared toward children. The area is not a large area (I think its about 5 acres or so). Hope this helps

in emails he explained to me that he has two separate operations running.

this is what i could decipher (his email communication skill isn't the best)

first he guides in northern cal in zones a and some in b. these are 90% guaranteed since the pig pop is so high. he has lease contracts with private land owners to hunt and guide.

second, he has some public lands in sd that he guides on but 50% chance of getting a pig since the pop is lower.

then he mentioned something about fenced in areas. when i asked how it compared to big horn, he didn't really answer.

i guess the lack of clear information and no reviews will make this one a pass for me.

Hear are my two cents. I took my son, his friend and I to Doug's for our hunter safety course and a hog butching class. He puts together a great education package.

He mixes classroom teaching with field lessons as well. For the hog butchering class, he shows both field butchering and full butcher butchering (I hope I made sense, lol). We enjoyed his classes.

I haven't been on a hunt on his land yet. So, I can only speak for what I have done. Doug, his wife Michelle and his son are nice people.

Doug is a good guy. The pig hunting he has on his property is great for kids. I took my 8 year
old son there earlier this year to get his first pig. It is a fenced enclosure that is full of good eating meat pigs and the wild pigs are able to get in and out. I was surprised how many wild pigs came through at first light.
He does his guide service all over. He does pig hunting in CA and elk and deer all over the west. You can't go wrong with any of his services.

Thanks for the input. I've got an e-mail in to him. I'm also thinking about attending his skinning and butchering class as well. $30 for a days intertainment is pretty good.

Doug's and his operation are GREAT! I can't speak highly enough about the man. His success rate is so high because he knows wild pig, there habits, and their habitat needs. His is also trained in wild game butchering and has an on sight, sanitary, butchering room with band saw. If you hit a pig then you can leave with a box of meat ready for the freezer. Also know that this is no turkey shoot. It's a true hunt and requires skill and preparation on the hunters part. But Doug is a wonderful and willing teacher and will helps you hone your skills. Great hunt for kids. And his wife Michelle make the best wild boar chilli in SoCal! Also check out is hunters safety and hog butchering classes. Good for all ages! By the way, this is not Doug! Just a friend who really thinks his efforts to educate our future generation of hunters is valuable.
