I plan on taking advantage of the August special at Santa Barbara County Outfitters in a few weeks. A self guided pig hunt, 2 days, 2 person minimum, 2 pigs, $250.00. At that price I can't pass it up.

I've never field dressed or proccessed a hog though. any tips for a first timer..

I know I'm being pretty optimistic that I'll get one, much less two, on my first time out, but I'd like to be prepared...I heard there's a pretty easy trick where you can hang 'em and drop out all the innards in one fell swoop....

I gut'em like a deer and have never heard of getting everything out in one swoop.......but sounds like it might involve a fuse and ample amounts of liquor/gun powder.

Don't forget to post up a report about your hunt, sounds like a great deal..just wished Santa Barb was a bit closer.

Yupp... just do it like a deer.

I've found that if you have the animal on the ground with a bit of a hill, you can get him opened up, cut the trachea and roll him over to dump it out. It's not "bloodless", but it is pretty easy. I have actually come to like doing it this way better than hanging from a rope... although it requires some convenient terrain.

Getting the skin off is the pain in the butt.

Oh yeah... when you skin 'em, make sure you skin the fat away too. I prefer to take it right down to the meat. Wild pork fat is way to strong for most folks.

Speck helped me gut the beast I shot at Chopper's a couple months back! The hill seemed to work just like he stated, watch out for them broadheads!

Can you please elaborate on the $250 deal you speak of? That sounds enticing.

Lurediver, spec said that since your pig was so small, he just used a spoon to get everything out in one swoop.

Arrowslinger, you've been misinformed the pig was so big that some have come to the conclusion that it was related to hogzilla! Speck and myself had to use a backhoe to gut the beast!

I've tried to gut hanging deer/pigs, makes it a little difficult getting around the pelvis.

Tom e-mailed me that he was going to have an August special. he did not say anything about archery only. Actually I think he posted it on his website also. It's an insane deal. Like I said, 2 day hunt. Minimum of two persons, up to 6 $250.00, and you can take up to two pigs. I am not sure if that is two pigs total, or per person, but I think it is per person....

Oh, and I've got the dressing part covered, Smallblockfuelie can help me with that part. I guess it's the butchering that we'll need a few pointers on. Another thread on that was already started.....

Hey, don't you guys go booking all the August dates before I get a chance to...hehehehehehe

They can be a bit tough to skin, but I have found if you hang them up and run a gut hook under the skin and slice it into 6 or 8 inch wide strips you can then just tear them down quite easy.
A pair of vise grips helps to hold the strips while you tear them too.

Which ranch is it on? and our all the weekends in August still open?

About skinning. The strip method works great. Hang up the pig, take a box cutter, and then cut all the way down to the head, about 5-6" apart. Box cutter works great, cuts thru hide and a little fat, without cutting the meat. Pull the strips down to the head, and then take the head off.
