My buddy and I drew cow tags in area 86 for 10/16-24. This is our first elk hunt and our first out of state trip (aside from bears in Canada in 2001). We'll both be using .30-06s and hunting with a group that he knows from his branch office in Denver.

Does anyone have any suggestions or words of advice for a couple of newbies?

The guys we're going with said they'd take care of us but I'd still like to hear what you have to say!

Thanks!

I've never hunted area 86, but every year I pack for both snow & hiking. Bring good optics & a good camara. Most anywhere in Colorado is worth a couple rolls of film.

I've seen a good number of Elk just outside the town of Westcliffe which is in 86. There are numerous USFS access points just outside of town.

Its some of the most beautiful country in the state IMO. I'll ask the wife to look for some picture's from the area and post them up here if she can find some.

Freedom,
I bowhunted for mulies in unit 86 last year. Saw a few mulies and a lot of elk. In fact, I may be back there going after some bulls durring the archery season. It is very up and down country. Some of it is very steep! I agree with COHunter, it is some of the most beautiful country in Colorado, bring a camera. Make sure you are in shape.

Fullsack, my brother and I hunted the Grieves area a couple years back. I don't remember if that was unit 4 or 5. Nice area, great for deer. Elk stayed up high in the black timber. A horse would have been a big help there.
What areas are you looking at?

Good luck, Rick

It's the first time hunting there, but my father-in-law has hunted there the past couple seasons. So I guess I'm at his mercy. His group has been pretty successfully to I hope that is a good sign of things to come.
