Well, after putting in for Elk in California for over 15 years I finally drew a tag. I drew a Klamath Bull tag, anyone ever hunted it? Anyone know anything about the hunt or can offer any advice? I have only hunted Elk out of state, Colorado/Wyoming so hunting Elk in California will be new to me. Thanks in advance.

I would get ahold of Lowell Diller who is the biologist for Simpson/Green Diamond Timber Company where this hunt is held. You may also try Lt. Rick Banko who is the DFG warden for that area. It's pretty steep country, rough hunting, but the bulls you will see are shooters. Good Luck and post us up some post hunt pictures.

It is a jungle.......Hunt the clearcuts. I believe that much of the hunting is done on Simpson timerlands which means there will be lots of roads. My friend did a cow hunt there several years ago and hunted hard never getting a shot.

IF U have the money, there is a guide that works that unit with awsome results. He has taken quite a few B&C heads out of that unit. Talk to the guys over there and they will all know who i am talking about. If U are interested let me know and i can get his info to U. His prices a really good too. I know of 2 guys that have drawn and both said it is a very hard hunt but they are there and be ready to stay the whole time they allow hunting. There was a kid in town that shot a monster over there.(350class) I think they said they hunted the whole season and shot him on the last day and was the only shot he had.

If I dont get the name of the guide from F&G or from the green diamond biologist I might need the name if you dont mind tracking it down. This news is kind of discouraging, the success rate last year was 70%, thats 7/10 hunters getting a bull. It can't be that hard can it?

I think U should be able to kill a bull on your own but if u want your best chance at killing a monster rosie i would pay the money for this guy. His first name is Cary. Everybody that i know has gone guided with him cant say enough good things about him. When i was on the DelNorte hunt with him a couple of years ago he showed me some film of a bull on the Klamth hunt line that was feaking huge. like 375 and i am not joking. Most all guys on that hunt will shoot the first bull they see. When u hunt 4to7 days and not see a elk and then u finally see a bull u will shoot too. I know that Carys guys usually can pass on a few bulls before pulling the triger. Like i said if money is not a big deal be smart and book him it will probbly be your only chance at a world class Rosie. IF u dont have 2500 hunderd dollars u are willing to fork over, just go have fun and be willing to stay the whole season if need to and kill yourself a bull. Hopefully a good one. Good luck.

I assume you're talking about Cary Jellison? Nice guy and does well for his clients. He guides for Cali elk in the Northeastern, Del Norte, Klamath and Big Lagoon units, as well as Grizzly Island. Price mentioned is about right if I remember for a 5 day hunt. He has a websiste I believe under G&J Outdoors or something like that.

Congrats again with the draw!

Well, I will talk to the F&G biologist in that area and see if I can get ahold of the biologist from Green Diamond, apparently he is either out of the office or does not return phone calls. I noticed the F&G information on the hunt specifically says that the elk are not evenly distributed throughout the zone so I am curious to see what they tell me about where the elk are at. I would imagine they would be more towards the coastal side of the zone......but I could be wrong.

Hi there! Congrats on the tag! You should have a good time on that hunt... email me for some more info...
kmorefield@dfg.ca.gov

I can give you the local biologists name and number... he might end up referring you back to me... I'm a Research Analyst (GIS) in Redding for DFG... I was given the kill maps for the last 5 years or so for that hunt and some of the other hunts on the coast. I could give you some areas to try. My understanding of how that hunt works (I could be wrong) - The hunt occurs on Green Diamond timber company land. You are not allowed to scout it before the hunt. You must check in and check out each day. That means no camping on the property.

Also, you might try talking to Joe Hobbs who posts on this site as DFGELK. He is the elk coordinator for the entire state (DFG). He might be able to provide you some additional details... email me and I can get you some contact info for some of these guys...

Sorry... I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist... I do a lot of the GIS work for Region 1 (from Tehama County north to Oregon, the coast to Nevada...). All of the tags are sent to Sacramento... I don't think anyone has time to work on putting a layer together for the whole state... they did do it for Region 2. See this link -
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/reg2/spotkill/

Not that I would put a whole lot of faith in the locations that people report their deer being killed...

If you want a guide & can swing it I'll 2nd ( or 3rd) for Cary Jellison. I've hunted with Cary for several years now and he is a top notch guide and just a good and fun guy to be around.I know that Cary has guided several clients to B&C Elk on the Klamath hunt. The web page is http://www.gandjoutdoors.com

Spoke to another guy that had that hunt this past weekend. Said he simply asked a rancher in the area if he could hunt, said most people in that area don't want the elk around tearing up their property so they are happy to let people hunt. Don't know how much land is in the hunt that is not timber company land but that is another option I guess.

Just to Clarify, Not just any property in the zone is open to hunting for the Klamath elk hunt.

"Area: Those portions of Humboldt and Del Norte counties owned or leased by the Green Diamond Resource Company within a line beginning at the intersection of Highway 101 and the Klamath River; south on Highway 101 to South Klamath Beach Road; west on South Klamath Beach Road to the Redwood National Park boundary; southwest and south along the Redwood National Park boundary to Highway 101; south on Highway 101 to the Redwood National Park boundary; southeast along the Redwood National Park boundary to the Bald Hills Road; southeast along the Bald Hills Road to the Klamath River; northwest along the Klamath River to the point of beginning.

So you need to be careful about hunting on other property which is not part of the zone.

DITTO DITTO on Cary JellisoN!!! hELPED ME GET A GREAT 7X6 SIX YEARS AGO.

Since tag is so hard to get and roosy's are so unique to elk hunting--get out the card and hire a guide. When the fog rolls in heavy and you don't know exactly which clear cut the elk are using- you'll be glad he's leading you thru the gates, deep into the jungle, to that clearcut. can be heavy-thick timber. Where I was' lumber company owned in every direction and helped with maps of roads and cuts that were open to hunting. Of course, Cary had already mapped this out as you can't go in in advance an scout!!!!!!!!!! Be sure to find out where they will let you hunt(boundaries), keys to gates, and when you can access to look area over.this procedure may have changed now.

ps. he guides for bucks in nevada too i think. Turkey in Grass Valley (near sacramento) calif and fishing for salmon and steelhead.

family operation!!

Mine is hanging in Hi-Tech archery in Fullerton, ca. dark horned-silver tips, beautiful animal and larger body than my rocky mountain elk hunts.

Congrats on the great bull. Did you see a lot of other bulls or elk in general? Did you just spot and stalk from the roads or did you sit and watch certain areas? Do any calling? Hunt is just around the corner, I cannot wait.
