I have had an unbelievable draw year. I drew Montana to start and now I have drawn Nevada 111-115 late hunt and also an antelope hunt in 021-022...A couple days ago I drew a New Mexico archery elk for Unit 34...I won't be going to Montana because I don't have enough time for all three....It's gonna be a great second half of 2006!

Pick your poison. Last year the first day or so the bulls were still just starting to get cows so you could find them by themselves sometimes, but, they were not responding to well to calls.

middle couple of weeks they were with cows so you have all those eyes to deal with if you want a herd bull and typically you cant call a bull away from a herd.

The very end of the season the rut was peaking.

That does not mean it will be like that this year.

I hunted the archery season last year and went emptyhanded but i had set my standards high and passed on sattelite bulls. I had many times that just a little more luck and i would have had one. to much brush for a shot, ran out of daylight, spotted by cows most of the time etc. etc.

However my kids had youth tags and both shot bulls the first day of their season one in the morning and one in the evening and the bulls were in full rut. If you searched JHO the pics may still be in here.

There are lots of bulls and a few real big ones.

That Nevada late season mule deer tag is the same one that I put in for. How many points did you have.

I had 5 and did not draw. I had put in for the outfitter season and the regular and still did not draw.

Let me know if there is anything else i can tell you about unit 34.

Hey Paul,

The late season Nevada hunt I drew is for elk in 111-115,221-222. I have already been flooded with solicitations from guides on that hunt. I just may do a guided hunt considering the potential of a big bull. Pretty expensive though. I have never done a big game guided hunt. One of the guides I spoke with was pretty optimistic on at least seeing 330 to 350 class bulls.

On the unit 34 hunt, this is my first venture to New Mexico. I am pretty excited for it. But as with any hunt where you are going for the first time, worried about wasting time in the wrong area. If you don't mind, I would like to pick your brain once I start doing the research, and get your opinion on the information I get. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg

Not a problem Greg. Would be happy to share what I know about the area.

Boy an elk tag in NV is a pretty big deal. Depending on the amount of time I had (time is always short it seems) i would most likely get a guide. bet those guys are getting about 4K a hunt.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I've got an archery bull tag for that NV unit and am going self guided, but I'll spend 2 1/2 weeks on it.

Hey Greg, you don't need a guide.... you've got Andy! Hell, you don't need a mule either for that matter, he can do that too. He is simply the best. One tough piece of meat. I couldn't think of a better man to have along on a hunt. Save your money and take him as planned, you'll do just fine. Best of Luck and congratulations

Hey MikenSoCo,

You've got that right...He's one hell of a partner...It's great to have a partner that is just as nuts about hunting as I am....Except I have to take three steps for every one he makes....He's going with me in Nevada as well....just for the sake of going....How do you know him?...and do I know you?

I was wondering how you planned on keepin' up with him

Andy is a fellow officer in the FD. We talk hunting constantly. He's got to quit running 10 miles before work every morning and put some fat on those bones. Seriously though, he's one of the best we have. He's the one you want at your side when things get sticky, be it in the woods or in a burning building. Don't tell him I was blowin' hot air up his Okolee hole. Have a great hunt/s. Best of Luck....

Wow! Mam, have you got a big season ahead of you. One year in Az I drew both a deer and elk tag one week apart.....still ended up with an empty freezer!

Hope you have fun.

You're right Dawg....I actually hope I don't draw Arizona...I would have to quit my job and get divorced to do Nevada ,New Mexico and Arizona......If I do draw Arizona, I guess I'm gonna miss my co-workers and family

Hey Greg, one word of warning when you get down to N.M. Be extremely careful when blowing any type of mouth call. Giant carnivorous birds have been known to swoop down from the trees and attack the call while it's still in your lips
