Dry firing

Any reason I can't dry fire my Browning deer rifle? I heard years ago that dry firing lead to damaging the firing pin, but that it wasn't an issue with modern rifles. Just want to make sure first. Any input? Thanks.

On one of the rifles I bought brand new, the owner's manual stated that "dry firing will CRYSTALLIZE the firing pin" and will lead to breakage of the firing pin. So I bought those dry firing dummy rounds with a spring loaded, shock absorbing dummy primer for one of my pistols. I seldom use those dummy rounds............instead I just drop the firing pin on live ammo at the shooting range. No dry firing for my precious, beloved guns.

I guess it depends on the rifle as to the damage ?, and I suppose one of those spring loaded dummy rounds is good insurance. I have also known some very competitive rifle shooters who have more than a few trophys from Camp Perry, and they dry fired as part of their practice routine.
