El Nino Returns, Rough Winter Weather On Way

LOS ANGELES, 7:57 a.m. PST December 12, 2002 - After years of mild weather, Southlanders could be facing a rough winter. El Nino is back and it could pack a punch this season.

Beachfront homeowners are already preparing for possible rain, according to NBC4.

Scientists are looking at weather patterns at the equator. Water is warmer than normal at the equator, according to experts. The change in temperature means that El Nino is on the way, experts said.

In the 1991-92 El Nino season, Californians saw 27 inches of rain. The average rainfall is 15 inches during that time period. Last year, the Southland had 4.4 inches of rain during the winter.

"It's definitely not going to be 4.4 inches of rain this winter," said JPL oceanographer Bill Patzert.
