I bought a Fox Pro call a few years back, and had some wild pig calls programmed into it...then found out that it was illegal to use an electronic call for pigs in California. I recently read in a hunting mag that the author of an article on pig hunting stated that he used an electronic call while pig hunting here. Did they change the rules on calls for pigs, or am I "mis-remembering" and they were always legal?

Thanks!

I've emailed the question to the DFG, but since it's the holiday weekend, I don't expect to hear back for a few days. I've looked through the regs, and I don't see the topic mentioned. I am pretty sure that I had read their use was prohibited previously, though.

I *think* electronic calls are illegal in CA but I haven't searched it.

yes they are illegal, for bears as well...I have checked into this and even DFG had problems finding it. I believe it was section 1008 in the dfg code.
I did write an email to the commission to get this up to change...you all should do the same.

Seems silly not to be able to use electric calls on everything.

http://www.fgc.ca.gov/regulations/current/mammalregs.aspx

§475. Methods of Take for Nongame Birds and Nongame Mammals.

Nongame birds and nongame mammals may be taken in any manner except as follows:
•(a) Poison may not be used.
•(b) Recorded or electrically amplified bird or mammal calls or sounds or recorded or electrically amplified imitations of bird or mammal calls or sounds may not be used to take any nongame bird or nongame mammal except coyotes, bobcats, American crows and starlings.

As a general rule, you cannot use electronic calls to "take" any game bird or mammal in California.

CA-DFG need to employ some people who know how to speak and write in English and organize the regulations in a more coherent manner. DFG also needs to decide on a regulation for the year and then not amend it or have a supplement to the regulations until the next hunting/fishing season.

475 refers to non-game animals and pigs are classified as big game.

Fish and Game Code Section 3012 - it is illegal except for nongame:

3012. It is unlawful to use any recorded or electrically amplified bird or mammal calls or sounds, or recorded or electrically amplified imitations of bird or mammal calls or sounds, to assist in taking any bird or mammal, except nongame birds and nongame mammals as permitted by regulations of the commission.
