I've booked my first elk hunt for 2008. It is 'supossed' to be for trophy animals so this question is directed for such. I'm going to work up a new load for a 300WSM. So for .308 bullet in any of the mgnum calibers, would a 180 grain be good or should I load a 200gr? I would like to load the 180 but this load is specifaclly for what will be (hopefully) a large elk. I'm considering either a bonded or an X type.

I don't shoot the .300wsm, but from my experience with the 30-06, the 180 grain is plenty of bullet. In the .300 it ought to be even better, especially if you're shooting the TSX or MRX bullets.

If I remember my reading and conversations correctly, most .300wsm rifles seem to favor the 180gr, but I'd say try each and see which one your rifle likes best. That should drive your decision, as the bullet you choose will only be as good as where you can put it.

180, might want to look at premium bullets such as Barnes Triple Shock or Trophy Bonded Bear Claw.

I shoot a .30-06 for elk using Federal premium Nosler balistic tips in 180 grain and have not had any trouble yet.

I've taken elk with a 30-06 165 TBB. I think 165 is alright but 180 is probably better if you can find one that groups good.

For cow elk, 165 gr is fine. For big bulls, go with 180.
