The "Hoochie Mama" works great. Can be used for bulls and cows - great for getting them to stop so you can take a shot.

Along with a Hoochie Mama get an original Woods Wise Hyper Hot call. While you are at Woodswise.com get their "CALLMASTERS™ REAL VOCAL ELK" DVD. It'll show you the ins and outs of calling elk.

I have used their call several times to call in bulls. Once in NM I called a 6x6 bull in from appx 1000 yards across a creek to within 150 yards for my buddy to make a shot. Started using the HH call as a spike bugle with a few subtle cow calls. When he finally bugled I gave him the Hyper Hot cow in heat call with a few regular cow calls, too. I carry a couple different cow calls to sound like a band of cows without a dominant bull. Every time he heard the cow in heat he bugled. He even brought six cows with him.

I have several different brands of bugles, I just don't use them much as sometimes a bull will feel threatened by it and herd his cows away. I use them seldom now, only as a locater.

I hope this helps, good luck. We expect pictures and a story if you connect!

PS; I just checked out the Woods Wise site and they have a package deal: http://www.woodswise.com/details.php?pid=ww19449

Hoochie mama and the "bite and blow" cow calls are good. Some prefer the "hands free" type reed calls for getting game to stop for a quick shot. Its really all prefrence. I have honestly never tried any of the reeds. But I was told that they area a little difficult to master, but can be very versitile once mastered.

Knight and Hale came out with some good stuff a couple years back. It works great also. Understanding the call and when to use it and when to not use it is a great tool.

I have heard guys who continually blow a cow call, LOUD, (unrealistic) in a early Nov. hunt, where I finally got up and walked another mile in the opposite direction. (He was probably 1/4 mile from me). I also heard a guy bugling like some nut on one of those early Nov hunts. That is not typical of elk during those times. During late hunts, the calls are to be used as a stopping mechanism if game are on a dead run. Thats just what I was taught. Have fun, and really practice with your calls for weeks before going out.

I try to have three or four to change things up. Mostly use the hyper lip single. You want to sound like a herd of cows when needed.

Actually I carry 2 Hoochies a reed call on a lanyard around my neck and a diaphrahm, like everyone says the idea is to create the scenario of a small herd looking for a bull, set each hoochie on a different setting and use both with the 3rd call sometimes all at once, remember elk don't take turn's talking, also know when to stop calling, when the bull is almost in sight stop calling and make him look for you, if you keep calling he will pinpoint you and spook if he doesn't see elk, one other thing , if you get busted , try to get ahead of the bull and use a Different setting on your call's, be alert, not all bulls are vocal, some will come to investigate silently

Suggestion

try the primos double reed Hyper Hot. I had a mess of calls to include a Hoochee Mama. tried to get a Bugling bull to come and nothing until I used this call, he came storming in, locked to our decoy and my buddy shot him at less than 20 yards. great call!!!
