Hello, I'm new to the forum. My name is Rob and I'm a long time elk hunter(sounds like the start to an AA meeting. I'm not there, yet) I'm toying with the Idea of decoys for my up coming bow hunt. I would like to test the concept, before using them while guiding the upcoming rifle season. Any imput on types and techniques will be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you in advance,
Rob

just a thought!

if you were talking about archery season ID say go for it! because they work! and if properly placed they tend to allow closer shots because the ELK tend to be looking for other ELK and seeing one in the area where the calls come from seems to focus thier attention, on the decoy, not you the ARCHER, shots durring archery season are shorter and chances are good a HUNTER will recognize a DECOY by the time hes into effective range for a shot

but ID think your GREATLY INCREASEING your chances of some TOTAL MORON shooting you durring gun season if your near an ELK DECOY, where shots can be made from 400 yards out by idiots, who shoot first then check things carefully.
concidering how many guys DRESSED in BLAZE ORANGE get shot at by MORONS , looking exactly like an ELK and making noise like an ELK seems to be asking for trouble durring gun season!

I've never used elk decoys yet but have talked with other bow hunters who have. Decoys can work great and can also spook game. I use turkey and deer decoys and they work usually to calm the animal and draw them in closer. Seeing what is making the call seems to make them believe their ears more than if they can't see anything where there should be a cow. The drawbacks are lugging the decoy around. If you're shooting a trail or wallow it's not the hassle than if spotting and stalking unless you have a knuckle dragger partner to lug it for you.

I also think it's a bow only hunt because rifle season you're just asking to get shot.

We have the Mel Dutton cow elk decoy in the JHO store.
