There is an archery hunt for Fort Hunter Liggett (both either-sex and antlerless). Someone gave you a little wrong information. In this issue of Tracks we put ranges for hunts that could be reduced because of Junior elk tags. The archery hunts were not reduced for jr elk hunts at FHL, but the corresponding general hunts were reduced by the number of jr elk tags for that hunt. So as an example, for FHL period 1 antlerless we issued one jr elk tag, so there will be 7 (instead of 8) general season period one antlerless tags. The only hunt that was set to zero (and not due to JR tags) was the Owens Valley Independence hunt. The quota was changed to zero for this year. I hope that answers your questions. Feel free to call me if you need any additional information.

Thank you DFGELK for the information.......I'm glad to see jr hunts and would like to see more even if it we have to give up some tags........todays youth are our future in hunting.

The junior tags came from the general pool this year but they will be allocated seperatly next year with the general quota going back the way it was. Says the person at the fish and game I talked to at least that is the way he was going to try and make it happen. If he did not take the tags from the general pool this year and designate them to the juniors they would have not ever gotten them. So we take bullet for the juniors this year and we all benifit in the future.

Every three years we (DFG) rewrite the environmental document which allows us to hunt elk in this state. This is the last year on the old document. We will be updating the document and changing some quotas around to give us more flexibility in the future. There will be changes in some of the hunts. I am hoping to continue the jr tags without effecting the number of general tags, but this may not be possible in all hunt areas. It is my goal, but I have to deal with what I am given as far as elk numbers. Elk are continuing to do well in this state and increasing in most areas and holding their own in others.
