My moose hunt to Alaska just got the ax, so I have to try and find a hunt to replace it with. I would like to go Elk hunting this season and try to keep it under 3000$$. Any suggestions? It can be guided or not.

This late in the game you are going to be restricted to OTC tags. Colorado certainly comes to mind. I'd get on the horn now and start calling outfitters. The good one's will be booked, but you might find a cancellation.

Another alternative is the New Mexico landowner's list. Lots of tags left since the authorizations aren't even issued until the end of this month. But, you've missed out on the draw for public tags there. You can get a tags well under the price you mentioned in better units there.

Another thought - I may be able to find you a moose hunt for that price - will be in Nfld or Alberta... give me an e-mail, if you're interested.

You can also take a chance and waite till the last min. Sept. even first of Oct. contact a number of outfitters and tell them your willing to go on a few days notice, things happen to clients and they have last min. openings. I got a hunt that way a few years back and saved 35% off cost.

These are hunts that you might only have 3-5 days notice need to have your bag packed and ready to go, I got a call maybe 3 years ago from a guide who I had been in contact with about a antelope hunt in NM price was $1000
he called and said i'll give it to you for $400 and that included tag and 3 days guided, he called on Wed. said I had to be there by friday AM season closed on Sun. I told him I could not make it he said how about $300.

still could not make it.

Try something new and inexpensive close to home... OTC in Southern Oregon, either sex archery tag, good wilderness areas (strap on a pack and grab a buddy), and some good elk no's. Blacktails are a bonus there too, good luck-

can you use a rifle as well , or is it only bow hunting? How is eastern Oregon, I wouldn't mind heading up that way for elk or Mule deer.

There are landowner tags available in eastern oregon for rifle season but they're expensive. Otherwise Eastern OR mule deer/elk is usually a 2 year or more wait to get the points necessary to draw a tag there.

Mule Deer and Elk hunting can be good in Eastern OR. I did OTC archery there last year and had a blast. I'm giving NM a try this year.

I may go back to Eastern OR for a combo hunt during archery season 2004 if I don't like unit 5B in NM...then again I might try out CO too. Basically, in search of an annual archery Elk hunt that I really like the best....am in a surveying phase right now before settling on an area. I'm hoping 5B turns out decent 'cause I got a sweetheart deal on landowners tags there and wouldn't mind going back next year.

Oregon will be raising non-resident tag prices significantly next year so the cost difference really won't make much difference compared to other western states.

there is no combo rifle deer/elk hunts here in oregon for general seasons. not any for draw tags either as far as i know of. if thats what you really want then archery is the only time you can do that with a general season tag.

now for eastern oregon if you are wanting a branch bull rifle tag its going to take you a while to draw one. OTC tags are available for spike only in most units. there are some units on the coast that offer branch bull tags OTC as well as the High Cascade bull elk hunt in Oct.
