Elk Hunting Camo???

I am planning an archery elk hunt next fall for the first 2wks of the Colorado Archery season. I am an eastern whitetail hunter, not sure of what camo pattern would work best. We were planning on hunting WMU 33, can I use one of the more readily available patterns available to me here, or am I better off to invest a little into some sage type camo??? Right now, I have REALTREE, HARDWOODS and MOSSY OAK, GREEN, will either of these type patterns work ok, or am I in need of a new set of outers??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First thing, forget the Eastern Dark Green Sticks and Leaves...
Out here in West, especially during the hunting season, you will need a pattern with mainly browns, tan and greys. Check out ASAT, Predator, even plain brown Carharts are better than the fashionably correct designer patterns. Choose one, that when you step back does not fill in and make you a dark blob... do a search on this site and you will find plenty of info and opinions... Good luck.

well im gonna have to disagree with easymoney. those patterns will work just fine if you do youre part correctly. if you set up with some type of cover to your back to help break you up those patterns will work just fine. use the shadows too. the places youll see those patterns come up short though are in open terrain with little to no cover. but in the timber areas theyll do fine if you set up correctly. i too prefer the Predator patterns but if you already have the others then use those. Heck all the Primos guys wear Mossy Oak and they have elk steppin on em so it works lol.

hey doug....i have talked with some friends of mine that go out west every year elk hunting....everyone seems to have their own opinion on what is best to wear...after talking with several i have went with predator and a set of seclusion 3d....i like both patterns and think they will work well with where we are going...only time will tell...but i agree with you...i think the sage patterns may work also...my 2 cents worth

Thanks for the info guys, I was leaning towards a Hardwoods Green pattern because I will be there in the end of August - 8 or so of September. Any other advice would continue to be appreciated, esp from anyone from NW Colorado!!!

I do not mean to sound as if I'm putting down any commercial camo patterns. But, I feel there is to much hype placed on the names and brands, to the exclusion of common sense.
Take this little test: take any camo pattern of your choice and take it outside into the area of your use and step back 20-30 yards, what happens to the ability to "blend in"? Does it match the colors and values of the surrounding vegetation and landscape? If it does blend in then it will work in that area, but if it is the wrong color, tone and value no matter who sells it it won't make you less visible to game animals... And oregonarcher brings up an excellent point: use the terrain and cover to your advantage, stay in the shadows, don't skyline yourself, and move only when the animals can't see you move...
