Anybody on the forum hunt Elk in Wyoming unit 38. Looking for tips for next year. My buddy and I went out there in 06. I got my mule deer but he did not get his elk. Because of the weather we needed to go up to get them but the area "up" is vast and I am just looking for a few tips as to where to start. Any info will be appreciated.

sorry have not hunted that unit, notice it is a limited quota unit, so you must have PP to draw. Good Luck.

SInce I'm a resident I can get a general tag every year, have bowhunted last 2 years in unit 86 and took a bull each year. You can see a pic of the bull I took this year in the JHO hunting journal article on the elk season by Speckmisser. I have also hunted in 82 3 years and took 3 elk, and in 75/79/77 and took 4 elk all cows in the late season (reduced price hunts). The big question of NRs is if there is wilderness areas in the units then you have to use an outfitter, not knocking outfitters, I've used them, but have been DIY last 3 years and killed more game on my own than with them. If you have more questions go ahead an email/PM me.

Does the general tag mean you can hunt any unit that has a general license?

I would rather do it on my own but you have to have a starting point. From the one time that I have done it during rifle season, if you don't get cold weather and don't know where the elk hide out, you probably ain't going to get one. Hard when you do not live there to keep track of them.

Yes, getting the general means you can hunt any unit with a general season, and cold weather usually means the elk will be moving, and living here is a big plus to keep track of them. Stick with an area you know. You will learn something each year, maybe not kill something every year, but you will get more satisfaction doing it yourself. You don't need to be in the best limited draw area to get into elk. Get out there and explore.

This year's going to be a lot tougher to draw since they've implemented the points system. I did not find this out until last year, but for the past two years you could have accumulated points (max is thus 2) and WY will start applying them this year. So, if you don't have any points........you have to compete with those that do. I'm applying, but I've resigned myself to gaining a point at best.

Well, I talked to Wyoming Game & Fish, and they told me the system was started two years ago and this is the first year they will apply them to the draw. If that is correct, whomever bought points the past two years has the upper hand.
