My Grandpa called Sunday night to say that my neighbor killed a 6X6 bull elk that weighed 800 lbs.!
They were putting on a deer drive and thats what they kicked up!
Mind you now, this is MISSOURI ! We don't have elk in MO according to the humble MO Dept. of Conservation, who came and took the elk AWAY!

The local newspaper came out and took pictures and I'm sure it will be in the national news this week.
I'll get updates as I find them.

I think I would've just pooed all over myself if I'd seen that come out in one of my little wheat fields!
----------------------------------------------------

This just in...The Hermann Advertiser-Courier

The Missouri dept. of Consevation is looking into how an elk got into the wild and was killed in Gaconade County early Sunday afternoon by two Hermann men.

Joel Binkhloder and Derek Vaughn were part of a deer drive when they shot a bull elk between Hermann and Gasconade, just off Hwy 100,said Dean Harre, conservation agent in Gasconade County.

Harre said there is no elk season in Missouri, therefore it is a protected species, just like the mountain lion, and shooting an elk is illegal.

The elk is possibly the first killed in Gasc. Cty.,according to Harre, who said there will be written warnings issued to the two men.

"We've had elk killed in Missouri before, but I don't recall the last time we've had one killed in this county,"said Harre."If there ever was,it was a long time ago."

Harre said Mike Binkholder,Joel's father, called him Sunday afternoon wanting to know the repercussions for killing an elk.

"They called and reported it,"said Harre."It was a case of hunters getting caught up in the excitement of the moment."

The elk was reported to have weighed between 800-900 pounds and it's antlers had a 36 inch spread.

Three weeks ago Harre recieved a report of an elk being spotted in the county on Hwy P about a half-mile south of US Hwy 50 near Drake.

"We recieved a phone call from another landowner who asked if they could shoot it during deer season,"said Harre,"We told them it was illegal."

The Missouri Dept. of Cons. is now investigating the elk, where it might have come from, and is doing tests for Chronic Wasting Disease.

He said the elk was not tagged, and could have traveled from a northern state like Michigan, but usually there are sightings before they roam that far.
"If it came from up north, somebody likely would have seen it,and there would have been reports,"said Harre.
He said game ranches are required to tag them.

Harre said fines are still pending. In the meantime, the Cons. Dept. has siezed the elk,and if found free of Chronic Wasting Disease, will be taken to Swiss Meat & Sausage Company for processing and the meat will be distributed to charities and needy of this area, just like the Share the Harvest program for whitetail deer.Harre said neither the meat nor the antlers will be returned to the shooters. The antlers will be used for educational purposes, said Harre.

I hope your grandpa's neighbor doesn't see you when you go over to
visit. I mean come on, you're a new creature that is venturing in his domain. Of course he needs to shoot you too right?.

It blows me away when I hear stories like this. Why people feel the need to blast any animal that they are not used to seeing is beyond me. It is hunters like this that give the rest of us a bad name.

I hope the fine they give him is a big one!

I agree with what Pooraim said. A jerk like that needs to have his weapons taken away if he can't be more responsible than that! "Caught up in the moment" is a BS excuse!

I have mixed feelings about this myself. Our state is populated, not wide open spaces. The Conservation Department was aware of a "loose" elk.Reports are around that one even had escaped from a hauler a year ago.No one reported it ever being caught.

I suppose they didn't try very hard to get it contained. These fellas might have saved some motorists life. Can you imagine hitting an animal of this size with your vehicle!! Our whitetail do enough damage.

When I lived in MO. there where elk farms all over the place.

I agree with PoorAim a nice round number like $2500 would get him to fix his eye sight, there is no excuse for blasting a way,

Boarstuff i'll try that one about saving people lives i'll go shoot a nice bull up in the Owens valley along Hwy 395 10 times the traffic as any rural Hwy in Mo. then tell the judge my story

Hey guys, I heard of this happening in Texas a few years ago. A rancher had a huge Elk wonder onto his property and he killed it. Fish and game couldn't do anything because they said Elk are not native to Texas, they don't issue permits for them, and if your hunting public lands or one comes on your property it's open game, it's not considered endangered. I read it in a thread either here or on MonsterMuleys.

Boartuff,

Wasn't trying to criticize you personally as you of course had
nothing to do with the shooting.

I think it is an interesting story and if it were indeed a wild
elk wouldn't that be great if they were getting established in MO?
Anyhow thanks for posting it. In my opinion the elk should not have
been shot, but you are entitled to your opinion if you think he made the
right call.

As for my handle, well.... I gave it to myself since I am willing to
admit I'm not the worlds best shot. But I keep working on it every
chance I get ... I wanted to go with a modest handle because I didn't
want to come across as one of those guys who is a boastful bragger..
Know what I mean boartuff?

Pooraim,

I do agree with you that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I would love for the elk to be re-established in MO if it were logical. But it doesn't look as though it is.

Thats a respectful way to go about giving yourself a handle.I too gave myself mine.It comes from one of my favorite animals, and well...they ARE tuff critters.

No boasting here either.

Good luck with your aim.
