As much as this idea kills me...the idea of not having elk over the winter is worse.
Wasn't able to do an elk hunt this year, and with some recent family news I won't be going next year as well. In lieu of waiting two years to eat it again, do any of you know where I can purchase some? I know it will be farm raised (not my first choice...believe me), but I love the flavor (although it won't be exactly the same as from the field).
Any help would be appreciated!

can you really compare "over the counter" elk with hunter killed, free range, no hormone, no steroid elk?

They say it's grass fed, all-natural, but what does "all-natural" really mean? It may end up tasting like beef but with less fat.

I wasn't comparing the two...definitely will be a difference.

Not sure where you are in California, but in north San Diego (Carlsbad) this place sells elk meat:

Tip Top Meats
6118 Paseo Del Norte
Carlsbad, CA

Irish, just a thought but since you live in Morgan Hill, maybe you could stop by the Predator Archery Shop in Gilroy and chat with the guys. About six guys in the club have gone to Utah and New Mexico for elk. I myself am going to visit and discuss a possible swap for some home made smoked salmon. If you have something good to trade, who knows? Just a thought.....

For the money, have you considered shooting a buffalo?

Bison run from $750 - $1000 for a 3-10 year old cow - 800 - 1400 lbs
Cow elk run around $1000 - $1500 for any cow - under 500 lbs

Elk breeder sites like this one may help as well...

Unfortunately, due to family constraints the cow elk hunt is out of the question.
Thanks for the link on the breeders.
