I am looking for a good elk outfitter in any state with big bulls. anyone had good experiences with any outfitters? if i could have the website or contact info I would greatly appreciate it!
No. But generally you are looking at a tough draw or private property/landowner tags to have a good chance at big bulls. Even the best outfitter can't assure you a good chance at a big bull on any sort of public land hunt on a OTC or easy draw tag. Yes, some guys get lucky, but... Anyway, you need to take budget for private tags/land, draw odds, type of hunt you want all into consideration. Traditional wilderness pack in hunts might be the most rewarding elk experience, but odds are you will have to go on more than one to kill a big bull in an OTC unit. A good outfitter will tell you that.
BTW, in answer to your other question, my favorite elk rifle is a .338 Win Mag. If you like it, get it...
Go to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation show in Reno this coming February. There will be a lot of guides and other vendors there as well as seminars. It is really a good show and worth the trip if you can swing it.
John with SJR Outifitters in New Mexico is a great outfitter and hunts some trophy units if you're lucky enough to get drawn or buy a landowner tag. NM doesn't have preference points and you get priority if you put in with an outfitter. Most of his trophy areas offer 30-40% draw odds, not bad!
I hired him for a drop camp hunt in 2008 but he offers semi guided and fully guided hunts at a very reasonable price.
Last I heard was around 12k. If you're interested, let me know and I'll send you a phone #. Pretty much guaranteed chance at a good bull. Sorry, no website.
I used Thomson Outfitters in Wyoming...he has supplied a few hunts to local RMEF chapters in Calif. Great service. You can apply for the pref pt area which has very good wall-hangers. Here's the website -- $4500-$4800 excluding guide tip..I'm applying for the same area again with Thompson.
Jon,
If your interested in Montana, try Broken Arrow Lodge in South West Montana.Sherry and Erwin Clark. It's public land, but they kill some nice bulls.Their guided pack in hunts are around $3000 dollars, great deal and good chance's.I think they went 5 for 7 opening week this year while I was there....
Tom Klumker, who owns San Francisco River Outfittters in New Mexico would be another great guy to contact. He does pack in hunts in unit 16B, the Gila Wilderness. They have excellent elk hunting, and take a very high percentage of large 6 pt. bulls. I hunted with Tom in 2002, and took the biggest bull of my life. It was on a landowner tag in unit 13, but Tom did a heck of a job, and the only thing keeping me from hunting with him in 16B is that I haven't drawn the tag.
