Interesting, thanks for the link. Sounds like a LOT of work but as they say, very rewarding too...

Looks like a good program. Atleast they are not paying sharp shooters to do the job.

so are you gonna apply rooster?

No Not this year. I have my work cut out in utah.I have two elk tags to fill there. Also I have three deer tags 1 in Utah and 2 here.
So I already have my work cut out.If they do it next year I might be up for it.

I put in for it just in case there is no snow in Colorado for third season. The best part is I can tell the wife that it is "free" elk meat. To top it off it will be a great work-out for my budding love handles...

Krad, I think Im with you, that sounds like a killer trip, hunting for free and you get to hunt 3 days straight with the oppertunity to shoot three days in a row. Nice, printed and will be sent tomorrow.

Anyone else in for the group hunt a JHO group maybe?

Read the FAQ's. Snow, sub-zero weather, hiking 8-10 miles a day and you have to pack the elk out yourselves. No help with that. Sounds like a great opportunity but a ton of work.

Preface this by saying hats off to the gents who are going to do the hunt,

If you look at it that you will be in a group so you will be able to help out other people get their meat out and then go for yours. I do not mean to be forceful, a troll, or a tool, but did you guys want a private limo to the hunting site and a sherpa or two to get the hard part done? Don't get me wrong, that will be a hard hard hunt, but that is Western DIY. Kick ass, tough as nails, the hair on your chest grows hair on it's chest to show how bad ass we are. We don't set up half a mile from the road, we use boot leather to get our game. Dust, blood, and sore muscles are what season our stories of the hunt. Would your rather hear the story of the guy who did nothing but by 3 G's and poke a Bull from a stand or the guy who busted his ass to get it done with will and grit then drug it back with his teeth?

We are western hunters, Sack up, buy some warm gloves and watch'em drop. I guarantee that elk will taste 10x better than a hunt where you took a Rhino to the foot of the hill, shot the Farm fresh bull and had the guides son drag, quarter and haul it out for you. All you get is a powder burn and a picture. Grab the bull by its 7x7 antlers and drag that baby to the table!

Sorry for the rant, just a little perplexed by people's opinion of a hard days hunt. Heck I did 5 miles of hunting in the mountians last Thursday after work and I'm going to do it again tomorrow. Some times we all need to a little John Wayne ass kick'n to show us that we can tame this land and that we ain't no catalog or farm-fresh hunters.

Filling the trophy room one mile and a time,

T

I read the FAQs and it's pretty interesting. ND is probably a tad too far of a drive for cow elk meat for me. I may sound terrible, but I'm saving my Wyoming points for a wallhanger, once that's achieved then I'll do just the meat hunt (cow, etc) but closer (New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, etc)...

I only pointed this out so folks would know what they were getting into. I know all about hard huntiing. I've packed to elk out of areas in Idaho guys with horses refused to go into. And you're right, that was some fine eating elk. Best weight loss program I ever used!

The more I think about this, the more appealing it it sounds.

Strikes me as a long boring ride solo.
Anybody interested in sharing a ride & expenses.
It would mean a same week application & both drawing of course.
I'm going to hold off a couple days to see if anyone is interested.

Elk hunting in a T. R. National Park,
sounds like it could be quite an adventure.

It's called the Mountain Man Diet Plan. Hike way back in there, shoot something real big and then get it the heck out before a bear it's it and you.

For sure Tucky, good food, girlish figures.

Well said T. I would join you but I'm on my own elk reduction program in two weeks in Arizona. Hunt hard, represent JHO well.

"In a traditional "hunt' the emphasis is on the recreational experience. Moreover, hunters must possess state-issued hunting licenses, adhere to strict limits on the number of animals taken per individual, and must follow the rules of fair-chase. For many sportsmen, the overall experience is a far more important measure of success than the taking of game. In other words, not filling a tag can still mean a successful season. In contrast, the primary goal of this reduction effort is to quickly, efficiently, and humanely reduce the elk population to the desired management level through a team- based approach. Elk fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) collars will be utilized to identify elk concentrations each day in an effort to enhance team effectiveness (a tactic not consistent with fair chase). " Direct from the source This is not a hunt, might as well fly a heli and do it from the air.
