Five newborn calves increase herd size to 39 with more calves expected.
JEFFERSON CITY Mo – Missouri’s 34 restored elk, plus five new calves, were released on June 1 from their three-acre holding site at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Peck Ranch Conservation Area into the larger 12,000-acre Refuge Area at Peck Ranch. The release followed final approval of stringent health-testing protocols by the Missouri Department of Agriculture.
“We opened the exterior gate to the holding pen to allow the elk to move into the Refuge Area,” explained MDC Deputy Director Tom Draper who was at the pen for the release.
