Hi, Well the elk will be bugling soon and the Archery season for deer and elk will open here on the 30th of August. I don't bow hunt but I will be out and around doing a little bugleing and checking on the Archery hunters to see what they are doing and where they are from. We get quite a few out of state hunters in here.   Have a good season and safe hunting.    idaho

Shep, I have wha is known as a power bugle. A good cow call would be good to have in case you get a bull running away you can blow the cow call and it will stop. Eastman makes some good calls. I will look at my cow calls and see if it says what kind they are.

I am in Elk City, ID for the summer. 3 miles out of town on our three acreas. In the winter we are in Lewiston where the Snake and the Clearwater come together. Lewiston is about 40 miles down the snake river from where the Salmon runs in to the Snake. Elk City is 125 miles up the Clearwater River from Lewiston.

Idaho:  I take off for Colorado on Sept 3rd for 3 weeks.  I use JONES diaphram calls for both cow/Calve and Bull sounds.  I ve tried most of the calls, and find these to be the best for my type of hunting.  I use the Small Bull call to make cow calls and the Medium Bull call for all other applications.  I like having it always in my mouth and ready to go.  I used to hunt the Middle Fork of the Boise River for Big bucks in Nov/Dec. but have found a very " anti California" attitude among the local hunters and Law enforcement types.  Any more I stay with Nev. and Co. for my out of state hunts...... hronk

Idaho,
My buddy will be up near you honting moose in unit 20. I hope he gets the big one I saw while sheep hunting there in 99. He was seen last year, so he still should be there. I will miss Elk City this year, but am looking forward to my mountain goat hunt near Challis. If you know the guy who moved from Florida and works the garage and tows with a Landcruiser, tell him thanks for the quick service in 99 from the guy with the old Ford with the big camper. I was able to get my ram on the last day of the season when I thought I would not even get back to hunt in time.

Shep, No closures as of yet. Not that many fires yet. It is getting drier so will probably have a few more soon. They have one on the salmon that I know of and it is 9 miles east of Riggins but they should have it out soon if there backfire works. I wil keep you informed through here as I get any info.

Eric, What part of unit 20 did you get your ram in. Out past Dixie or down toward the Whitewater ranch ( the road that goes down and crosses Mallard Creek.  I used to camp in the camp ground right at the top of the road where you go down to Mallard and go Elk Hunting before they came up with the Zone Areas.  Unit 20 is a Mountain Tag Atrea for Elk.  Before they started that I could start hunting elk there on the 15th of Sept. and if I didn't get a elk I could continue hunting elk in unit 15 when the eason opened up in Octtober.

Idaho,
It was up Rattlesnake Creek, I went in on foot from the Whitewater ranch, I was a pretty worn out puppy after I got back. I took the boned out meat, cape, horns, my rifle and spotting scope and burned my camp gear, as I knew another trip in would finish me off. I spent about a month total there. There used to be some rams near Mallard Falls, but I nor anyone else I talked to could find them. My mounted ram is posted on the opening page at http://www.dinostaxidermy.com The hunter success for rams there is low, but the draw odds are good.

I normally hunt Colorado or Wyoming but my hunting partner talked me into hunting Idaho this year.  We have Elk B-tags for the Salmon area. I will only have one week, one day driving each way and five days to hunt.  Not being too familiar with the area and since I won't be able to make a scouting trip out there can someone suggest an area to concentrate on?  Also which portion of the season is likely to be more productive for a one week hunt.  Unfortunetly finances preclude utilizing an outfitter.

Eric, Are you from Idaho. Haary, I am not familiar with the area down around Salmon. Send a letter or e-mail to the Idaho Fish and Game Dept and ask them the same questions. You would be suprised at how much information they will tell you. I have drove through that area but never hunted there. I hunt mainly in Unit 15 and 16 for elk although I have hunted elk in 10, 12, 8 and 8a, also unit 11, and 20. I have hunted deer in all these areas also.
Wish I could have been more help.

No Idaho, I am from CA. But if it is any consolation, I guess this year you might consider me an Idaho taxpayer, as my goat tag and license cost more than I paid in state income tax here in CA this year. I have applied for a few jobs up in Idaho with no success yet.

Next week I will take a drive and see if the elk are bugling yet. I tried a few bugles from the place here the other night. No answers yet.

Idaho, what do you know about the area around Challis.  My hunting partner's brother-in-law got drawn for the area just west of Challis.  We didn't get drawn for the controlled hunt he drew.  We have B-tags and will be hunting to the east of him.  I have never hunted Idaho before.  I closest I have hunted to Idaho is in Montana near the Idaho border west of Hamilton, MT.
