Can anyone give me an idea how much a cow elk weighs boned out. I'm planning my fall hunt and may fly instead of driving so I need to figure out whether or not it will make it in under the airlines limits. I've only shot a Tule elk before and never weighed it boned out. Thanks in advance.

the "LAST" cow elk My wife shot, field dressed at 310 lbs,and another went 340 lbs. Most will weigh in at or about these weights, unless You shoot some "Ol Rip"that is older than the hills.

Take the field dressed weight,(310 lbsX.430) for Boned elk meat, comes out to 133lbs.Looks like to 70 lbs "Coolers" will get You home---

azbiggame,

Thanks for the info. I hadn't seen the factor to apply to field dressed weight before. Very useful!

My 6x6 bull went a little over 300 pounds, boned, wrapped and frozen. One 150 cooler and two and a half "normal" sized coolers. Tasted great, too.

azbiggame,

You're right it's definitely hunting not just shooting. I don't think there would be much reason to go if it wasn't. Just trying to get my ducks in a row ahead of time so that if I am successfull I won't have to scramble at the last minute.

Rick,

Wow! Congratulations on your bull. With the formula above thats a 700lb field dressed bull, very impressive.

Navy looks like you have real good numbers already.

With the elk I have taken the Tule bull was 295 lbs. wraped and frozen. I took a very large RM cow in Utah a couple of years ago that was 280 lbs wraped and frozen. Last years was just a youngin' 75lbs wraped and frozen. I'd say prepare for around 250 lbs and you should be in good shape.

Good luck!!!

Figure on even less weight if:

You are not hunting with horses

OR

You have dropped your elk many miles from the nearest road and it is just you and one or two people. Packing out by shanksmare means 3-5 loads by yourself.

If you have access to horses, an ATV, or a truck with a winch and a 1/4 mile of rope, then you can bring out the whole animal.

Fortunately, mine was a 75-yard neck shot and it was only about 1/4 mile to the road. Very little meat was wasted, but that weight did include adding beef fat to the the burger...and I had a lot of burger made.
